New Orleans in big trouble
1. the levees broke, water filling up the city.
2. main gas pipes are broken, fires breaking out.
3. It's being evacuated.
Many dead. Bodies being pushed aside in the waters.

Major problems in New Orleans
Total evacuation planned. In areas where it is dry, they have buses picking up people. About 20% of the area.
They are sending Navy ships around. Plan to helicopter people to the big ships. It will take a couple of days for them to get there.
The situation is becoming desperate. They are evacuating the shelters that people went to in the first place. Water still rising.
The bodies floating in the water, I heard, do not constitute a health hazard.

Re: Can the city be saved?
First there are tens of thousands of refugees to be evacuated, 30,000 plus from the Superdome alone.
The occupants of the Superdome are being sent to the Astrodome in Houston. They might be able to put them in boats and then into buses.
450 buses are on their way from Houston.
Apparently, the water has ceased to rise. It's neither rising nor falling.

Re: Can the city be saved?
They were looking for people with flat-bottomed boats.

Many thousands dead, I believe
There's a small town in Miss. which had gotten cut off--the bridge in was destroyed--and finally the search and rescue teams entered the town, took a look around, and said, "This is not a search and rescue mission. It's a bag and tag mission."

A point about storm surge
Some are suggesting that once a storm reaches Cat 5 near land, the storm surge is on, even if the storm weakens later. In other words, Miss. got a Cat 5 storm surge and a Cat 4 storm. Looks like from damage done a 25 ft surge. That's what did all the killing--not the wind.

Some problems in Houston
Houston is becoming a major refugee camp, and there is a little spill- over of lawlessness. All these people are trying to get into the Astrodome who are not supposed to go, according to the "rules." Supposed to be only for the people from the Superdome.

Sniper fire
Somebody fired on helicopters evacuating patients from a hospital in New Orleans.
Why?

security in New Orleans
In response to a question at an interview, the head of FEMA said that security in New Orleans was "very good."

Re: Sniper fire
"Hospitals are trying to evacuate," said Coast Guard Lt. Cmdr. Cheri Ben-Iesan, spokesman at the city emergency operations center. "At every one of them, there are reports that as the helicopters come in people are shooting at them. There are people just taking potshots at police and at helicopters, telling them, `You better come get my family.'"
I guess I understand a little now.

Inteiviews with Officals versus news reports
There is an amazing diference between what the federal officals are saying, and what the networks are reporting.
Just an example: a reporter asked the head of FEMA about the dead bodies, in New Orleans--whether it was a health hazard.
He said he didn't know about any dead bodies.
Well, hell, you can see them on TV. Does he watch the news channels?
Obviously a lot of this stuff is being done on the fly, and it's difficult.
The Astrodome in Houston has stopped accepting occupants at around 4-5 thousand, after saying they could take 25,000. The local fire marshall said that's it. Of course, they are providing cots to everyone--it's not like the Superdome. But why could't they do the arithmetic of that in the first place? Seems simple enough.
Anyway all those buses are going elsewhere--God knows where.

Some Complaints about my fellow Americans
I would also like to respond to all those fools who have been talking about how other countries have not been offering help. I've been running across a lot of that talk lately, and it's not true.
It's just that these other countries don't make a big production out of it like we do.
Over 25 countries have offered any assistance they can--from generators to medical personnel to cash. But they don't advertize it.
I would also like to apologize to my friends from other countries who have to put up with the ill-mannered boasts of my fellow Americans who keep talking about--in the topic about Iraq, for example--how great we are. Sorry.
It's been worming at me ever since I read it.

FEMA
Federal Emergency Management Director Michael Brown told CNN that federal officials were unaware of the crowds at the convention center until Thursday
He wasn't aware of those crowds? I was aware of it. The entire country was aware of those other crowds of people. Why wasn't he?
All you have to do is turn on the television. Damned fool.

Re: FEMA
The Prez. just said about 30 minutes ago that Brown is doing a "great job. He's working 24 hours a day."
I would like to point out to George W. that there is a difference between doing a great job and working hard. One might work hard and do a very poor job, which is the case here.
I can see, I think, what the problem is. These people have tunnel vision. They are so hyped up about setting "priorities" that they can't see what is obvious to everybody else.

Re: Louisiana without clout
Just look at the way President Bush senior handled hurricane Andrew
Actually, Andrew wasn't handled all that well either. But in any case, Andrew was a much simpler problem.
