Coast Guard
I just wanted to make a quote note to make it clear that no one is criticizing the individuals helping. Everyone on the ground that I can see is doing an excellent job.
Yes. I've been impressed by the Coast Guard search-and-rescue teams. Very professional and efficient. And dedicated. They refuse to take breaks until they are so exhausted they have to.

red tape
I tend to agree with Randman that a lot of the delay has to do with bureaucratic snags. I'm not sure about the details of his analysis, but I agree with his general point.

Re: Pitiful
The response before and after Katrina was inadequate, but it's the response afterward that should come in for damning criticism.
Yes, Trixie. I'm right here by it, and it hurts my heart.
Apparently the whole problem was due to red tape.

Personal experiences
Ok, so we were going to go out to the Astrodome to contribute some stuff. We had a lot of stuff.
No way you can get in there. They told us to go to the Food Bank.
Ok, we went down there.
One look at that place will put you in fear of your life.
We came home. We are sitting on the back porch enjoying our beer and poetry. We accomplished nothing.
