New Orleans - Another Casualty of the Iraq War
Oddly enough, it turns out that this is Bush's fault, too:
quote:
A year ago the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers proposed to study how New Orleans could be protected from a catastrophic hurricane, but the Bush administration ordered that the research not be undertaken. After a flood killed six people in 1995, Congress created the Southeast Louisiana Urban Flood Control Project, in which the Corps of Engineers strengthened and renovated levees and pumping stations. In early 2001, the Federal Emergency Management Agency issued a report stating that a hurricane striking New Orleans was one of the three most likely disasters in the U.S., including a terrorist attack on New York City. But by 2003 the federal funding for the flood control project essentially dried up as it was drained into the Iraq war. In 2004, the Bush administration cut funding requested by the New Orleans district of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for holding back the waters of Lake Pontchartrain by more than 80 percent. Additional cuts at the beginning of this year (for a total reduction in funding of 44.2 percent since 2001) forced the New Orleans district of the Corps to impose a hiring freeze.
Bush flip-flopping on his promise to preserve Gulf Coast wetlands almost certainly contributed to the tragedy, as well.

Just like FEMA, I'm going to go ahead and make a prediction of my own - I predict that Tal and Faith and all the other mindless Bush apologists will respond with something like "oh, another liberal 'blame Bush' attempt." My question to you two is, why shouldn't Bush be blamed for this?

Re: Many thousands dead, I believe
I don't know who you are yet but that is uncalled for.
Not to mention, humerously misdirected. Randman may be many things but he's definately not an evolutionist.

Re: I am surprised as well
Why can't FEMA fly in supplies and drop them off to them?
Maybe because Bush has been busy phasing out FEMA in favor of an as-yet-nonexistent divison of the Dept. of Homeland Security.

Re: Has this been posted?
If God is all powerful, and hurricanes are his weapon of choice against gays, how come he hasn't hit San Fran with a hurricane?
Or, you know, someplace where really evil things are happening? How come God hasn't expressed his displeasure with, oh, say, the genocide in the Sudan? I guess God hates black people?
Hell, there's about 3-6 countries in Europe that allow gay marriage. Some states in the US won't even let them adopt, and we're supposed to believe that we're the ones God is pissed at?
Not only is it stupid, and insulting, and hateful, and everything else that the right-thinking people here are lining up to say, it doesn't even make any internal sense. If God hates fags, as the Rev. Fred Phelps would have us believe, how come the hurricane hit the gay-hating American south (aka Jesusland) and not one of the myriad queer-loving countries of Europe, where they really let all that stuff hang out? (Anti-homosexual slurs used in jest, of course.)

Media Coverage
As if the tragedy wasn't bad enough apparently we have a racist media covering it.
quote:
One of the images, shot by photographer Dave Martin for the Associated Press, shows a young black man wading through chest-deep waters after "looting" a grocery store, according to the caption. The young man appears to have a case of Pepsi under one arm and a full garbage bag in tow. In the other, similar shot, taken by photographer Chris Graythen for AFP/Getty Images, a white man and a light-skinned woman are shown wading through chest-deep water after "finding" goods including bread and soda, according to the caption, in a local grocery store.
"Looting" or "finding"? | Salon.com
Clearly, it's not "looting" if you're a white person.

Re: I'm sorry but many of the comments in this thread are just plain funny.
Yeah, totally. They don't call it "hurricane season" because it's one-dollar shooters at Applebee's.

I would expect human beings to not create rape rooms and to not enguage the people who are there to help them. I would expect anger and rage in their tones, but not a breakdown of moral values.
It's an unfortunate but not surprising outcome. The vast majority of most people's morals are social; that is, they do what's right because they see their friends do it, and they refrain from transgression because they know they'll be punished.
When you turn that on its head; when everyone you see is doing something wrong or evil and there's not likely to be anyone that can punish you, you'll commit these acts. That's how you get abuses at Abu Ghraib, that's how you get hundreds of thousands of normal German soldiers to participate in the Holocaust, that's how you get the war crimes of Rwanda and the Sudan.
It's not a justification, but it's the explanation. It's a rare human being indeed that can remain moral in the face of immorality. I suspect every one of us here would have little compunction about committing questionable acts in a similar, desprate situation. (I'm pretty sure that none of us would rape anybody, of course.)
When you tell people that they are highly evolved animals, they will act like such.
Possibly, but even when you tell people that they're the special creations of a moralistic god, they still act like highly evolved animals when the chips are down.
Given the economic status of most of the victims, and the condition of most of New Orleans's schools, my guess is that the victims in question were instructed in a religious view of morality much more than in some evolutionary view.

Many times, the people who hate Christianity will plant one of there own in the group as a radical and then try to paint the whole group as a bunch of waccos.
Uh-huh. What's your evidence for this, exactly?
As far as I can tell, your religion is more than capable of coming up with its own wackos. And what indicts the larger Christian community is not that they're expressing agreement with the wackos, because they aren't, of course; it's that they mumble some weak-assed verbal repudiation and then - nothing. No sanctions, nothing.
It's especially hilarious when your real leaders give us a glimpse of their real agenda, like Robertson did the other week. Oh, I know you try to play him off like he's some kind of fringe kook, but that's a pretty hollow statement considering he's one of the three most influential Christians in the nation's public eye, founder of the Christian Coalition - the largest Christian organization in the country - and a man who, indeed, represents Protestant Christendom itself to millions including our president.
You're going to have to wake up about this, LB. The idea that anti-Christians are seeding your religion with kooks is ludicrous on the face of it. These wackos emerge from the seedy underbelly of your own faith, they're completely genuine, and you need to deal with that fact.
