Another cat 5 headed for the Gulf Coast. I'm glad to be well away from the projected path this time, but Houston is going to be rather close and on the east side. Jar, aren't you down close to the Mexican border? That would seem to be substantially to the west side so maybe you won't see much damage in your town, but this thing is another monster. On this track, if it holds together after landfall the way Katrina did, Dallas could be in for some serious trouble. Hard to believe!
Here's the latest track projection map, from Weather Underground:

All levity aside, my heart goes out to the people of Texas, particularly those poor souls who went to Houston after enduring the American equivalent of the Black Hole of Calcutta. I had already said that I can't imagine what they've been through, but to add something like this on top of it! None of us can imagine the sort of dread they must be feeling. Life ain't fair, is it? FEMA has Pre-Positioned Supplies and First Responders in Houston.
See Message 5 for maps of the area. Oh, one other thing. The Mayor of Houston has asked everybody in low lying areas (If there were a Mount Houston it would probably be at 30 or 35 Foot Elevation) to beat feet. If the HIGH over the mid section moves east Rita will probably visit Houston. If it stalls out it's likely Rita will stick her tongue in my ear. One BIG difference. Where Houston sits about 10-20 feet on average above sea level, I'm at 100'+. And they call it the Valley. Aslan is not a Tame Lion

Looks like it's jogging a teeny bit west, which is good news for Houston.

Right now, it seems to be heading right for Palacios, one of my favorite little towns. If it was to hit Palacios as a cat-5, Palacios would cease to exist.

quote: Not that you shouldn't be paying attention to the forecast tracks, but we're still what, 48 hours or so from landfall? Today's 4 PM strike probabilities still had a 10% of landfall within 65 miles of New Orleans. At any rate, this link, this will help put things in a little more context, since the storm isn't likely to run right down the center of the line. Page Not Found

Actually being on the east side can be almost as bad as being at the center, because of the way the wind moves
Katrina damaged the coast from NO to Mobile AL Here's another interesting view\prediction:
AccuWeather, Rita's Projected Path (click) The predicted size with time is a new feature ... I would also like to see iso-lines for cat1, cat2, cat3, etc winds. Of course the project that we had set up for work just south of NO was relocated last week ... to Texas City ... I'll let you know the next location so we can predict the next hurricane ps -- why has there never been a "Q" hurricane? by our ability to understand RebelAAmerican.Zen[Deist

There aren't enough names beginning with 'Q' available to be rotated, so (I think) by international agreement that letter is skipped. So is 'Z', unless I'm mistaken, and there may be one or two others.

quote: You mean like the "Q" tornado that slipped past the weather control nets to assassinate some former residents of the Continuum? There aren't a lot of "Q" names though I can think of one or two. Here are the lists of names for the next few years: Tropical Cyclone Names There are a few for the Philipines and SW Indian Ocean. but just think of the poetic justice of a hurricane named by our ability to understand RebelAAmerican.Zen[Deist

Does this mean there have been five other hurricanes since Katrina?
