Another way to describe it would be "the desire to belong to a group of 'wise pioneers', who will later turn out to have been the first to go against an existing tide of ignorance" so, all of contemporary art then?
You know, that's not a bad example at all, lol

Fifteen minutes...
You got it, if I can help it: I, Parasomnium, hereby support Annafan's claim of being the first to discover the "Smartass Falacy", even of the original argument for its existence is itself an example of said "Smartass Falacy". Satisfied? This message has been edited by Parasomnium, 20-Sep-2005 01:24 PM

Satisfied? LOL It is a self-producing fallacy... (and I didn't even notice) My discovery becomes better as time goes by. I'll share credit with you. ;-)

Re: Fifteen minutes...
I guess it was to be expected. What else do you get when you put a Belgian and a Dutchman together, but a joke?

You know, that's not a bad example at all, lol especially not if you're trying to get your bachelors of fine arts right now. god these contemporary nuts piss me off. it has to be new and exciting or it's worthless -- skill doesn't matter, just as long as you're the first person to do it. who cares about meaning or even interest. does it look like you threw junk you found laying around together? good! is about something but totally devoid of actual content? a+! can you make an empty concept sound witty or impressive or new, even if it's the same old trite garbage? you'll do well here... אָרַח

It is not just "Appeal to Novelty", because an essential component is that it should not be widely known. So its a special case of Appeal to Novelty? I haven't seen anything here to convince me that isn't an appeal to novelty with a motivation thrown in.

It is not just "Appeal to Novelty", because an essential component is that it should not be widely known. So its a special case of Appeal to Novelty? I haven't seen anything here to convince me that isn't an appeal to novelty with a motivation thrown in. No matter where I read about "Appeal to Novelty", it is always defined as an appeal to something that is NEW. Appealing to Tradition Fallacy "The fallacy of an appeal to novelty occurs whenever someone attempts to base a conclusion on how new, recent or "fresh" something is. This is common in advertising - entire marketing campaigns are designed around the goal of getting potential customers to believe that the product is new and therefore worth having." Maybe I gave a couple of examples that weren't ideal, and that causes the confusion. The "Smartass Fallacy" is meant to appeal to the exclusiveness of information, the hard to get-factor. Not necessarily to the fact that something is newer or information is more recent. I should think of some better examples... It guess it goes more in the direction of an opposite of "Bandwagon fallacy". This message has been edited by Annafan, 23-09-2005 04:00 PM

Appeal to exclusivity - it has a nice ring to it.

Birth of a new meme...
Appeal to exclusivity - it has a nice ring to it I see the meme has started off. Let's see how well it does "Black Hole" was even catchier, though.
