I love optical illusions!
This thread could capture links to some and be used when someone starts on about bigfoot or UFO that people have "seen".

where is the cross?
This only works if you disfocus the connection between both eyes (creating a willfull "lazy eye", also useful when looking at stereo pics).
Doing this, as if it were possible, is not the same thing as "suspending one's rational mind" but it might as well have been if I could have sustained the color difference physiologically. Perhaps I am just too legally blind but I can see how the thing could work.

Not an illusion, but fits here!
More "NOT seeing, is not NOT believing"
Especially concerning the "Bigfoot sighting!!" example...
The Gorilla Experiment:
Daily Telegraph Start Page
Link to actual "Gorilla"-video is second on the page, then the first of the "Inattentional Blindness Examples", "opaque gorilla from Simons and Chabris."
Java needed.
I tried it with 5 colleagues. Only ONE was NOT fooled.

Re: Not an illusion, but fits here!
didn't work on me... cuz I was expecting a gorilla. I'll have to spring it on someone unsuspectingly and see if they notice.

Yeah, it doesn't work when you know it's an experiment about perception, or when you hear something about "gorilla" before watching the video...

Re: Not an illusion, but fits here!
The problem is you didn't get all the instructions. You were supposed to count how many times the balls were thrown. Concentrating on that causes quite a large percentage of viewer to not see the gorilla.

It's my fault... I should have elaborated a bit to not spoil it for the readers of this thread. I was too anxious to just post it

Holy ****!
Now that is a good one!

Quite fun. I really like that one.
You can change your focus around and make the dots reappear and then re-disappear around in the circle. For some reason I find that entertaining and have already stared at that screen for 15 minutes I better get back to work
