And if you can believe Salibi, a lot was mis-translated.

And being subjective, of course, means it can`t be inerrant. Except in the eyes of the true believer. Of whichever sect. I wonder how many sections of Christianity who originally hailed the Qumran Scrolls as a confirmation, now wish they hadn`t turned up. Possibly, coming to a dig near you, we might recover the words of one of the twelve. Even Jesus`'How to be a Real Christian' manual. Without footnotes. Or redactions. Signed.

Re: personal communication
There is something there other than my intellect or my environmental influences that causes me to truly understand what I am reading. It cannot be defined, it cannot be proven, but it is there for me nonetheless.
Well, here is where faith comes in because I believe it is the Spirit of the Lord guiding me.
But that`s what every splinter sect of Christianity says, too. Their guidance, their interpretation, their inner feeling. Who`s right?

KJV or not to KJV?
The King James Authorised Version has 25,000 exsisting documents (98%) that are in agreement with it
Hi, Dave and welcome. I`ve never been impressed with the argument of numbers. If there is a large family like the Byzantine, then there could be a variety of reasons why they exist in quantities (central authority, dedicated scriptoria, fiat to destroy heretical copies, etc. What is more important is the provenance back as far as possible to the autographs. Most scholars agree that the early centuries after the Gospels were written offer some of the most corrupted copies. So we have to transit that minefield to validate the later families. Even within the Byzantine (Antiochian)group we find 'the great bulk of Byzantine manuscripts defies any attempt to group them'-Zuntz-The Byzantine Text in New Testament Criticism. Or Clark 'The main conclusion regarding the Byzantine text is that it was extremely fluid-----'The Manuscripts of the Greek New Testament. Or Metzger points out that scholars only compare a set number of texts for variations and no one has studied them in their entirety. (Text of the New Testament). To draw a conclusion that the BYZ family is closest to the originals might be a long bow.

It is such a blessing to me to know with confidence that I have the very words of God.

Re: The character of Sinaiticus and Vaticanus
I see you have been doing your research, Dave. Congratulations. Now have a stab at the Qumran Scrolls and see how the picture gets more tangled. For anyone to state we have the unadulterated texts, is to indulge in flights of fancy.

Re: plagiarism is bad
Sorry, Dave, spouting propaganda ain`t going to advance the search one bit. Believe what you like but try to ignore hard facts. We don`t have anything like autographs.

Re: "There is NO inerrant Bible"
Hi, Will, and welcome to the fray. It`s not a good plan to use the shotgun approach as a long stream of challenges just disintegrates into a 'he said, she said' type of debate. If you want to delve into the search for originals, the first thing you have to do is put dogma aside, because we know that 'providential preservation' has nothing to do with biblical inerrancy.
The scary thing I have been considering is that there may not have ever been autographs, but oral and written folktales incorporated into a control volume.Hilkiah`s crowd may have been busy bees. The fact that the scribes could correct text makes me wonder just how holy they found their texts (the Emendations of the Sopherim, the underlying attitude of the peshers in the Qumran Scrolls, etc.)
Just how infallible the KJV may be is under query if the Southern Convocation of Churches in the C of E found it necessary to assemble a skilled committee to revise their 'inerrant' volume. And so it goes on-----.

Nice pic, Arach. Kinda reminds me of my ex-mother-in-law.

Mistranslations
Arach, could you do me a favour? If you haven`t read it, try to get a copy of 'The Bible came from Arabia'--Kamal Salibi. Putting aside his geographical arguments which caused controversy, I found his development of Hebrew mis-translations to be interesting. He believes Semitic native-born speakers have a better ear for metathesis and consequently offer a different version to our standard translations. As you are studying Hebrew, you will be in a far better position to judge his arguments than I ever will. Just like your opinion--no rush. If you have read it, what did you decide?

Re: Most Christians today do not believe in inerrancy
Hi, Will, I think you misunderstand our intentions. I don`t think anyone considers their explorations to be The Final Authority, but when literalists insist they have the answer, contrary to the evidence, we say prove it.
