The other question is what kind of jazz? Dixieland? Bigband?
Now I like Bigband (sing sing sing - with Gene Krupa, Glenn Miller and Harry James ... 7 min 40 sec of bliss) and I like Billie Holiday on blues anyday. I also go with Jar on Tommy Dorsey and Song of India. Artie Shaw, Begin the Beguine, is also in there. Holiday also sang for Shaw and Miller and Goodman, so those are bonus for me.
When it comes to modern stuff, I like it small group, thoughtful. Miles.
I don't like riffin on as many notes as you can include in a minute kind of stuff. A lot of modern stuff is like this, and to me it is just technical craftmanship without soul.
