Reading, writing, drinking.

"Drinking" is a hobby? No wonder you think life is meaningless. I don't see the connection. "Turning out pigs for creationists makes me blue and blurry."--Brad McFall

A disciplined training regimen can eliminate that problem. You speak no doubt from personal experience?

Approaching 55, with a 40-year history of enthusiastic drinking, I enjoy a sound liver and an iron stomach. Bacchus grant I have 40 more! This nefarious habit has no doubt affected your teleological philosophy.

I, too, took robin's brief message as referring to serious drinking, not sip 'n spit wine tasting. I hope I was right. Monday through Thursday: M and W 8:30 pm--drink beer (several) Tu and TH--10:00 pm--drink beer (not much, sleepy) Friday afternoon and night--wine (Friday night is wine night) followed by beer (quite a bit) Saturday night--it varies, but some drinking of something will no doubt be done. When out somewhere, I sometimes drink Margaritas. I've been known to have a Martini or two. Sunday afternoon--a few beers.

Can we refer back to this, and then check the time of your PNTs to help us decide what to do with them? It might be a good idea. On a Friday night late . . .

Have you ever gone for several months without drinking at all? I think I did, back in the 80's. If you are suggesting, Schraf, that I would have been a better person, or a happier person, or a more accomplished person, if I had not drank, no doubt you are right. But you must realize that people are what they are. I could no more change my habits than I could change the color of my eyes. I have many flaws. Drinking is but one of them. I have gone my way. In my twenties I was irresponsible, in my thirties and forties I was a hard worker, and now in my fifties I am steady. I have accomplished, of course, nothing of value, but I did try (to invoke Jar). And I am not going to give up.

So, when you told us all of your alcohol consumption habits, and I observed that it was not all that surprising that you thought that life had no meaning, then I wasn't very far off the mark, was I? The drinking has nothing to do with the philosophy.
No. People are, in most cases regarding behavior, what they choose to be I disagree. It's possible to camouflage one's nature. It's not possible to change it.

Like you, I do not plan on giving up, and although I am usually "wasting time" at EvC, I DO not feel as if this letter to you is a waste of time! Neither do I. Thanks for your comments. I didn't know I was so horrible as all that, but maybe so. Good luck with your health.

Anyone can change their behavior if they choose to. People are born with tendencies toward certain types of behavior. Everyone has their flaws.

But nowhere is it written that you cannot change your flawed behaviors if you want to If you say so. That's not what I see when I look at the world, however.

My brother in law is an alcoholic who quit. Both of them were using alcohol to "treat" their depression. Well, I'm not depressed. I'm happy. I've always been happy. Nihilism is neither negative nor positive. It's a certain view about the nature of life--and an imminently reasonable one I might add. My nihilism is a aimed at anti-sentimentality and anti-piety. But you make a good point, Schraf. I drink too much.

I reckon in any case, that if life has no externally-derived meaning then there is no such thing as wasting time Ultimately, yes. I'm working on my bible for the nihilistic church, iano. Need some rules. Here's one: It is never a waste of time to enjoy oneself unless such enjoyment interferes with other, even more enjoyable, activities.
