Chess, poker, role playing games, listening to music (anything from folk to rock to opera, no hip hop or vapid pop).
Principally though, my life is complete as long as I have a subject about which I can learn. Currently I'm going through a bit of a chess obsession.

I race model sailboats every Sunday. The ones I race are East Coast 12 meters, which are based on a sixties vintage America's Cup boat. They have a 6 foot tall mast, are 58 inches in length and weigh about 25 lbs. Link to EC-12 homepage: The East Coast 12-Meter R/C Sailboat

Hey, Bren! At 46, my life is anything but typical for folk my age! Most of my friends have kids and work slavishly to support them..(which I respect) but since I have no kids, I spend a lot of my time chatting with other peoples kids (OPK) and giving them advice, listening to their problems and being a good big brother to them.
I volunteer with the Denver Area Youth For Christ at the state detention center. While there, I do anything but preach, usually.I have met kids who later got life in prison, kids who were abused and are hurt, kids who are angry and who I would never trust with my adress (or car keys) but who nevertheless need to talk and pray with someone...and then I have my "unofficial" adopted group of families and friends whom I share time with....I go to dinner at their house, play with their kids and watch goofy movies with them. Other than that, I work at Safeway and I hang out here at EvC...where I bug Chris and Charlie! And listen to Jar! And laugh at Yaros avatar! and answer posts by Brennakimi the photographer! (BTW how do I get my picture into the pictures/faces thread?) PB

At last, a chance to finally explain my EvC name. Perhaps with my new avatar, this is not necessary, but Fly Fishing is one of the ways I spend a great deal of my non-working life. There's nothing like standing in one of the many beautiful trout streams found in Michigan, trying to fool an animal with the brain the size of a grain of rice into thinking the "thing" floating past is a piece of food . Along with fly fishing is, of course, fly tying. I recently convinced my brother to take up these activities as a way to calm down and unwind (he has a very stressful job). He loves em. I highly recommend them to anyone that needs a way to relax. But, believe it or not, fly fishing is NOT my favorite "waste of time" activity. Nope...that distinction is held by bicycle riding/racing. I do a great deal of that. I have a really nice bike and during the warmer (as in: the roads are not icy) months that is where you'll find me. So let me ask you people out there . why do drivers hate bikers so much? I’ve been honked at, cussed at, flipped off, and run off the road. I’ve had stuff thrown at me, been squirted with water and doused in soda. Hell, I even had one guy stop his car, jump out and want to beat me up! WTF! Are we bikers that intimidating?

i think it's mostly that they get in the way of assholes with big trucks. it happens to cars too, but since a bike is smaller, it has a kind of a red herring effect. they think that the vehicle size determines the worth of a person.

So let me ask you people out there . why do drivers hate bikers so much? Because the time that your speed drops to its slowest is also the time that it's the least safe for me to pass you - going uphill. So I really have no choice but to tail your ass at 12 mph all the way up the damn hill before I can safely get around you.

I'm usually about to be late, though; as a rule I don't show up early for work because I don't get paid any more for it. And I have the local stoplights timed to the minute. Your 30-second slow ass is gonna make me 5 minutes late.

People who drink a lot also tend to spend a lot of their time drunk.
Being drunk (and hung over) all of the time doesn't tend to lead a person to having a great deal of ambition, or to feeling particularly good, in general, about life. This is not an absolute, of course, but it's very easy to use alcohol as a crutch or an escape from one's issues and problems, and thus never deal with them satisfactorally. Believe me, I can tell the difference between my coworkers who drink all the time and those who don't.

I guess I understood his use of "hobby" to refer to the enthusiasm with which he pursued that evocation, not the frequency that he did so.
I hoist a pint (or more) with my pals maybe once every two weeks; I have hobbies that I pursue less frequently than that. Maybe RR's just really enthusiastic about beers, wines, and liquors. I would think a professional gormand like yourself would see a kindred spirit in that.
