Re: My drinking routine
Have you ever gone for several months without drinking at all?
I think I did, back in the 80's. If you are suggesting, Schraf, that I would have been a better person, or a happier person, or a more accomplished person, if I had not drank, no doubt you are right. But you must realize that people are what they are. I could no more change my habits than I could change the color of my eyes.
I have many flaws. Drinking is but one of them. I have gone my way.
In my twenties I was irresponsible, in my thirties and forties I was a hard worker, and now in my fifties I am steady. I have accomplished, of course, nothing of value, but I did try (to invoke Jar).
And I am not going to give up.

I waste most of my time on the computer. (3 guesses where, first two don't count)
I enjoy movies and reading.
I do enjoy graphics on the computer and putting home movies on DVD. I've been pulling very old movies off of VHS lately and scanning old photos before they disappear.
Genealogy research gets me out to the cemeteries in the summer. Yeeha!
Fall is canning season and winter is sewing season. Actually after Thanksgiving I'll be hiding myself in the basement getting my Christmas sewing done, hopefully before Christmas!
To top it off I'm a Teetotaler.

Nobody can make you feel inferior without your permission. -Eleanor Roosevelt-

road rights
Hell, I even had one guy stop his car, jump out and want to beat me up! WTF!
Try being intentionaly run off the road by a red pickup truck with a white cap on Cadboro Bay Road in Victoria BC ... being cutoff by a car making a right turn just after passing me and then braking hard to make the turn (with a bicycle hanging out of the trunk) ... and again, recently, being run off the road on Water Street here (with a 20 mph speed limit) by a green jeep ... while being yelled at by passengers in both instances. And I have a friend with a steel pin from his hip to his knee from being run off the road by a semi -- and he was on a motorcycle (unfortunately for the semi driver this was observed by a motorcycle policeman ... serendipity in action eh?)
It has to do with some people having a completely false sense of the validity of their ignorant opinion of the relative rights of bicycles and other drivers ... in spite of the information being readily available.
Join American Wheelmen and (a) learn about defensive riding (quick turns - saved me from hitting the quick turner, making eye contact, position on the road, etc) and (b) become involved in actively promoting bicycle safety awareness. The life you save may be closer to you than you think.

Ah yes, such a classic move. I love when they zoom past you to try and make the turn, then chicken out at the last second and brake hard to "let" you pass. Which in turn forces me to brake heavily because I have NO idea what they're doing, and forces all the cars behind HIM to brake as well. Just relax and watch the bike pass through the intersection, and we'll all live longer, healthier, richer lives. Thanks!

No doubt. Anything you don't have to assume, don't do it. I take up more of the road so that when I "feel" a car bearing down on me hard from behind, I can actually move over and avoid them. Much better feeling than simply hugging the curb or parked cars and waiting for someone to pinch you out.
But at least San Diego has a pretty good number of bike lanes (even if they have a fair amount of glass and debris). There's only a few roads with no lane at all, and a good mixture of aggressive / defensive driving (best defense is sometimes a really strong offense!), it's pretty OK.
Except for those horrible, horrible decisions on when to pass a bike and when to just wait... and when to pull out of a driveway, and when to wait in your driveway so you don't nail the biker that can proceed even though there's traffic, because there's a bike lane.
Although I did almost kill a guy on a bike in downtown Seattle once. Was in the left lane of a one-way road, and went to park on the left. Had NO idea there was a bike lane on the LEFT side of the road. Really bad feeling when the dude was yelling at me. What could I do but say sorry (he was already gone by then).
Ben

Dear Schraffy:
Robin, maybe you could have letters to Dear Schraffy as an advice columnist in your next play installment! Personally, I can relate to your alcoholism (which is what you should call it and which you should NOT be ashamed of admitting,BTW) because I am a Type II diabetic who nevertheless still consumes too many sugary foods even as my body is slowly crippling itself because of them. I usually shy away from looking at the big picture and just attempt to take life one day at a time.
Like you, I do not plan on giving up, and although I am usually "wasting time" at EvC, I DO not feel as if this letter to you is a waste of time! Certainly we all have compassion for each other and certainly we try and support each other through our respective struggles and issues.
Ms. Schraff has helped me come to terms with my diabetic issues through a very compassionate letter which she wrote me a few months back. I suppose that the lesson that we can glean from online communication is the fact that we are not alone! Keep fighting that good fight, Robin! PB

Heb 4:12-13-- For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God's sight Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.

The drinking has nothing to do with the philosophy.
No. People are, in most cases regarding behavior, what they choose to be
I disagree. It's possible to camouflage one's nature. It's not possible to change it.

Neither do I. Thanks for your comments. I didn't know I was so horrible as all that, but maybe so.
Good luck with your health.

I don't remember mentioning anything about changing people's "nature".
I was talking about changing behavior.
We each make many choices throughout every day, most small, but some are of great importance and impact.
Anyone can change their behavior if they choose to.

People are born with tendencies toward certain types of behavior. Everyone has their flaws.

Yes, I agree, especially with regards to the tendency to become addicted to alcohol and other drugs.
However, biology is not destiny with regards to behavior.
We all choose to follow those "tendencies" or not, every day.
We choose.

Everyone has their flaws.
Of course. But nowhere is it written that you cannot change your flawed behaviors if you want to.

omg you guys are so painfully off topic.
besides. you judging him ecause of his drinking habits is so puritan. i'm a heavy drinker, but i still keep a job and go to school and live well enough.
values are values. if someone can't press his values of gays being chosen sinners then you can't press yours of drinkers being the same.

I'm sure that some do. Most probably don't but some do.

No, probably not. However, he can learn to stay away from alcohol altogether.
The choice he makes is to not drink.
