But nowhere is it written that you cannot change your flawed behaviors if you want to If you say so. That's not what I see when I look at the world, however.

quote: I never said he was a sinner. I just observed that his philosophy of "life having no meaning" made more sense to me after he told us of his heavy drinking. Also, he's the one saying that he has no power over his own behavior.

But nowhere is it written that you cannot change your flawed behaviors if you want to quote: I currently work with at least 10 recovering drug and/or alcohol addicts. I probably know around 20. My father is an alcoholic who quit. My brother in law is an alcoholic who quit. Both of them were using alcohol to "treat" their depression. I am surrounded by many people who decided to change their flawed behavior. They wanted to, or were ordered to by the courts, but I don't know any of them who actually regret deciding to do the work to change their behavior.

You both seem depressed and negative a lot of the time. haha joke's on you. i'm the most hopeful, chipper person you'll ever meet. i'm not disgustingly cheerful, but i get the job done. just goes to show how well text transfers feeling when feeling isn't being discussed. also, don't use either and neither in the same sentence. it's painful. My brother in law is an alcoholic who quit. Both of them were using alcohol to "treat" their depression. Well, I'm not depressed. I'm happy. I've always been happy. Nihilism is neither negative nor positive. It's a certain view about the nature of life--and an imminently reasonable one I might add. My nihilism is a aimed at anti-sentimentality and anti-piety. But you make a good point, Schraf. I drink too much.

Robin writes: But you make a good point, Schraf. I drink too much. I've always thought that it is less to do with how much a person drinks (or in my case, hash) but rather why one drinks. Even in my heaviest days of smoking hash, the amounts involved weren't tremendous but the amount of time under the influence of it was. Not to turn this into a God-thing but I remember reading The Screwtape letters and there was a part when the Chief Demon is explaining to Wormwood how it is that he should use drugs to destroy people: be that drink, smoke, materialism, EvC, sex, career etc. First there is the extra-pleasure that one gets from engaging in it. This is to lead the person into more and more - in pursuit of more of the pleasure. Then after a while, the trick is to start removing some of the pleasure for a given input. The chief Demon talks of the joy (for him) when he starts removing the pleasurable aspects. The victim is then required to push harder and harder into it to gain the same pleasure as he once had. Eventually all the pleasure is removed and the person is left with what remains - addiction. John Cleese did the audio book and at this point gives a fiendish little laught and the exquisiteness of it all - the person impaling themselves.... My own wasting time? Far too many things to mention. It would waste even more to try and list them. I reckon in any case, that if life has no externally-derived meaning then there is no such thing as wasting time - which could be said to be spending time in a meaningless (or in a less-than-optimally-meaningful) way

Need some rules. Here's one: It is never a waste of time to enjoy oneself unless such enjoyment interferes with other, even more enjoyable, activities. First book of the this bible should, I suggest, be called Revelation:
The Nihilistic Bibles Revelation writes: 1:1 In the end, God didn't make the heavens and the earth... And no good works-based bible would be complete without 10 commandments. And the first commandment needs to be the basis of the rest. It would be fitting to call the book that contains them Excrement....(as in Monty Pythons "...lifes a piece of sh1t, when you look at it") 1.2. 3. We've decided Nietzsche is the Messiah so we should have Gospels according to some of his disciples: Casimir, Turgenov, Beckett and Warhol. Satre could be our doubting Thomas, whose contentious Gospel fights for inclusion. Hitler could be the great Apostle Paul who expounded so brilliantly on the source material. Stalin could be Peter, very effective but less brilliant than Paul.... (Note to Robin: my somewhat negative view of nihilism is not intended to indicate that this is the only interpretation possible - every bible needs it factions and sects in order to confuse what the true message is) This message has been edited by iano, 24-Nov-2005 04:22 PM

The choice he makes is to not drink. So he cannot change the behavior, only avoid it altogether?
Most probably don't but some do. I am absolutely certain that some cannot chose to be homosexual. If you can't flick your bic, you can't write with it. by our ability to understand RebelAAmerican.Zen[Deist

If one were gay the one couldn't be absolutely sure someone else didn't chose to be gay. If one were straight one couldn't be absolutely sure someone else didn't chose to be gay. Only if one chose to be gay after they were straight (or vice versa) could one be absolutely sure (of the opposite to what you are saying)

Here's one: It is never a waste of time to enjoy oneself unless such enjoyment interferes with other, even more enjoyable, activities. Actually, being a bible, it should be put in a more formal style: nadanotes. 2.23. Partake freely therefore of the bounteous earth, the dripping honey, the leavened bread, the flesh of goats and the flowing wine, but beware lest ye forfeit the greater good, the comfort of women and the long journey of the mind.nadanotes. 2.24. For where your appetites are, there will your stomach be also.

You've caught the style nicely (I'm wondering are these verses are somewhere in the bible). But you have a 'therfore' nested in there so you'll have to work backwards towards Nn2:1 in forming the basis for this doctrine

nadanotes. 2:25. Life might be likened to a farmer who must choose which to harvest first, the wheat or the corn. While he is thus taking thought, a storm comes out of the mountains and destroys both crops.
nadanotes. 2.26. Why, Master, do you speak in parables? nadanotes. 2.27. To protect the truth from the eyes of the vulgar, apostle. Don't ask stupid questions.
