and i'm telling you that some people drink because they like drinking. i really really just like the taste of irish car bombs. i really like a good czech pilsner. i really just like asti.
i'm not depressed or escaping my problems or angry or not contributing to society. and really, who are you to suggest such things simply because i drink? i also don't wear makeup and don't eat much. do i have diagnosable poor body image leading no doubt to eating disorders? nope. just lazy.

quote: I never claimed that everyone who drinks is a problem drinker. Most people are not problem drinkers. I myself drink wine quite frequently and mixed drinks every once in a while. I like the taste of certain alcoholic beverages, too.
quote: Call me crazy, but to me you come across as angry, especially when you call people names and hurl insults as you so often do. When I said that it is undeniable that many people use alcohol to avoid dealing with their problems, I was not talking about you, specifically. Why do you think that everything I say is about you, personally? Listen, if I want to say saomething to you, I will. If I say something about "many people" it means that I am saying something about "many people".

I'll just point out that these to statements do not in any way contradict one another. They could both be true, and probably both are true. and i'm telling you that some people drink because they like drinking. So what's the argument here?

Hey, is it still ok to respond to the OP?
what are your hobbies and the weird things no one would suspect you do with your time... i think it would be interesting to get to know you crazy kids a little better. I play some chess, and I have a great chess puzzle program when I'm looking for something to do. I run 1-3 hours on Sunday morning before the rest of the family gets up, because I dream of running the Badwater ultramarathon when I turn 50 (135 miles across death valley in midsummer, then halfway up Mt. Whitney). The rest of the week, I have to squeeze the running in where I can. I like to play soccer, and I live in a village with 100 kids, so I get to play some long games here and there. Six of those children are mine, and I live with another couple that also has six children under 18, so I'm lucky to have time even for what I just listed. But with any time that's left, I study sports medicine and theology and argue with y'all.

I write really bad poetry, childrens' stories and take terrible photographs. I collect and restore old fountain pens, hand made custom knives and old firearms. For relaxation I enjoy shooting, particularly with a handgun or classic rifle like the original assault rifle, the Winchester Model 1894.

I also watch birds--that is, if I can manage to stagger outside. We are waiting for the winter warblers to appear. They will be here any minute now.
And generally we are into "National geographic moments." Had a lot of them lately. Racoons, possum, and big turtles. I've been living here for 25 years and never saw any before in our yard. Something must have disturbed them where they usually stay.

Yup - I'm going through a big chess thing at the moment too. Its pretty fun, though I think it might eat my life. If you aren't already, I'd recommend going to a club. I think I've improved a little over the last year when I've been going to a London chess club. Say - would you fancy a game? at itsyourturn.com I'm named extrememedium. Look me up if you fancy it! I'm not very good though. Ive only been playing for a couple of years.

Great idea for a topic. Okay.
I have been playing a lot of chess recently. For about two seconds I thought about trying to learn Go - but then I played it on Yahoo and got so utterly crushed I decided against it. I have stumbleupon on firefox, but I'm trying to cut down. I write simple little songs on my guitar, and sometimes record them with my friend in his tiny home studio. I draw. Mostly I draw naked people. I used to draw a couple of amateur comic strips but don't have any reason to at the moment. I am perpetually trying to get back to writing my teen fiction book without actually putting pen to paper. I write film reviews for a website. People give me books to read and I put them in a pile. I spend loads of time wandering around here. Thats about it I think.

Can I ask, what is the great chess puzzle, and is it free? I need to tighten up my tactical eye, I think....
Thanks

I also watch birds--that is, if I can manage to stagger outside. I watch stars. Right now Venus and Mars are up in the evening and Jupiter and Saturn are up in the morning. I think Jupiter rose about 4:45 this morning, right before a beautiful crescent moon. Uh, I realize those aren't stars. One comment on birds for those of you that remember Stephen Fretwell. He lives in the village with us and has for about a year and a half now. My son Caleb (age 11) and one of his best friends, Elijah, have both been learning about birds from him. Elijah recognizes all sorts of birds now, and we're always asking him what this or that bird is. It feels weird, because Elijah is very short, so he only looks about seven years old, but he knows birds really well. We went to see a bird demonstation by park rangers at an Indian festival at some very old Indian burial mounds near here. The ranger told us about a call he got from a lady who had a hawk patrolling her bird feeder. It was eating her little birds, and she was very distraught. He told her, "Well, it IS a bird feeder." She didn't think that was very funny.
