We are dead to the law in regard to salvation. In other words, we are not saved by the law but by Christ's death. The NT is simply a guideline of what we do to honor God. If we dishonor him, we ask for and receive forgiveness and that is how Jesus takes away our sins. Whereas in the Old covenant, the Jews had to obey the law for salvation. We no longer have to. Since Christ paid the penalty for our sins, we now honor the law out of love, gratitude and thankfulness for what God has done for us, not for salvation. And that's why Christ's death frees us from bondage and instead gives us love and gratitude.

My big dilemma on both of these scripture quotes is that they seem to condradict each other. On one hand it's ok for women to speak out in church if the head is covered, and on the other, they can't talk at all in church!
There is no contradiction. The second admonition was Paul's personal preference - Corinthian women should keep their mouths shut in the Church.
The first admonition assumes God can speak through a woman, yet Paul interjects another personal preference.
In context Paul was speaking to the most troublesome and carnal N.T. church - Corinth. The admonitions apply if the shoe fits. History has showed Corinth never produced a god-damn thing.

Prophecy Not Restricted To Church Services

Hi Karen. If you take both scriptures on Paul literally, you have no problem.
1. Men did the speaking and prophesying in or out of the church. Much of the prophesying was done outside of the church services; likely most of it.
2. Women could prophecy outside of the church services. Mary and Elizabeth are an example of this as their prophecies were in their homes.
3. Even some OT prophets usually prophesied outside of the temple or synagogue. Jesus's great Olivet Discourse prophecy was while he was on the Mount of Olives sitting around with his desciples.

The immeasurable present is forever consuming the eternal future and extending the infinite past. buzsaw

hats
Any women who prays or prophesies with her head unveiled brings shame upon her head
I think Paul had a good idea here. There is nothing more attractive than a woman's face set off by a hat.

Purpledawn and iano's analysis
iano writes:
Not having thought about it in depth I would tend to agree with Purple Dawns analysis that it had to do with the culture of the day. This because (as she has noted) there is a hint from Paul that this is indeed the case. Whilst I don't feel that everything in the NT (or OT for that matter) should be weighted so significantly in the light of the culture, there is a case to be made here.
I think this analysis is probably correct, but I remember years ago getting into an e-mail exchange with an Independent Baptist who believed that these New Testament passages taught that women should (a) not wear head covering; (b) wear their hair long; and (c) wear skirts and dresses. He eventually got mad at me when I started to challenge the King James Version's inerrancy (he's KJV Only), and that was the end of our discussions.
Obviously, Paul's writings, especially many centuries after the fact, are going to be a source of controversy. I guess we all need to study the koine Greek language and early Christian cultures and customs before we get dressed for church!

Never overestimate the intelligence of someone who thinks you're wrong.
