HIV research - from wester to easter ... ?

My machines are chugging along so slowly that I wouldn't be "competitive" even as a unified force. I'm going on the principle of "every little bit helps". And if I can help a good cause by doing absolutely nothing....

I saw my first HIV module on my work computer today. You might want to dedicate one machine to that program, I think the modules might be smaller for that application, and it does go directly to the question.I don't mind cleaning up the protein folding because of the vast medical implications to many different diseases. But I am also excited to see the same power applied to HIV.

What ratio of protein:hiv results are everyone getting. I have both programs open on my device but have only worked on the HIV modules.

I thought of forcing one machine to HIV and the other to the proteins, to ensure the I cover both bases rather than let it be arbitrary. So far I've only had one HIV module.

Well, so far RAZD I've only got a couple of s l o w boxes hooked up. But I do believe I can get a few hares and a bunch more tortoises in harness in the office within the next few weeks, and I've got the parts to cobble together a four-box network of FrankenPuters here at home over the holidays.I'd happily sign them up as anyone's, really...I just couldn't resist tweakin' Ringo a bit: I loved that old song when I was a kid...And like Ringo, I can't resist the opportunity to do good doing nothing: at work, I can even do it on somebody else's hardware and power bill--the corporate landlord's, as it turns out, since my employers pay flat rent without utilities--and that pushes all my buttons, do-gooder Scout and white trash bad boy alike.

Is that the FightAIDS@Home project? My equipment is too puny for that.I guess I'll just stick to my protein origami.

yes. too puny??? what are you running, an 8086AT? (I did my first cad on an 8086AT ... and made and drank a lot of coffee ...)

Not even on my good machine. Testimonial: The human proteome folding program runs painlessly even on my ancient and decrepit machinery. So there's no reason why people with 21st century equipment can't do it.

did you try forcing it to HIV? my laptop is maxed out at 224 RAM - I'd have to remove some to add some, and that isn't cost effective imh(ysa)o.They need to make USB ram sticks .... This message has been edited by RAZD, 12*07*2005 06:19 PM

Can we set those machines that can do the HIV modules to do those only, and leave the protein folding to our smaller machines? My laptop won't do the HIV (I tried to force it by only picking that) even though it has everything needed except it's 17 megs of ram short.I might have to pony up and get a solstice present for the machine.This message has been edited by RAZD, 12*08*2005 07:44 PM

When I signed up I selected the "do any" option for my laptop as I'm happy for my spare CPU cycles to work on both.Since then I added my Linux box which can only do the protein folding (not 'cos it doesn't have the legs - it's hunkier than my laptop - the FightAIDS@home option isn't available for Linux), so I guess I can force the laptop over to do HIV. Actually whenever I've checked it's been doing that anyway.
