another dinosaur-bird thread
could an admin maybe drop a message in metatron's thread about bird tails that i've responded in the archaeopteryx thread as i think the focus of the op is broad enough to include this discussion there. no need for four threads all on the same basic idea.

Considerations of the "Soul ?" Proposed New Topic (PNT)
    http://EvC Forum: Soul ? -->EvC Forum: Soul ?
The opening message is quite long, and AdminPhat has put it on hold for that reason.
While it has been standard procedure to try to keep the topic opening messages concise (and I don't fault AP's action), there have been exceptions to that "rule". I think that this topic maybe should be one of those exceptions. While it is too late and I am too fuzzy headed to really study the (long) thing, it offhand does seem to be well written, and I generally have a good "gut feeling" about it.
    Comments?

Yes, it's nothing but a cut & paste from a piece written IIRC by a poster who went by the name Boris over at sciforums. Based on that I have rejected it. Other Admins may feel otherwise.

    No so fast, young Guido!
Seeing that Guido has, very enthusiastically, proposed a new topic, I suggest he be prodded to respond to a few posts addressed to him in existing topics first. Admins?

    Question on PNT from brennakimi
In PNT brenna suggested a comic POTM thread.
AdminNWR and AdminPhat (under an alias that doesn't indicate he's an admin - bad form ) both vetoed it, AdmnNWR on the grounds it would be at the expense of the people who posted the nominated posts.
I'd like to ask brenna to clarify this. I read it as her wanting it to be for intentionally funny posts - those one-liners that Moose periodically gets all pissy about. I'd be all in favour of this. I agree with nwr about not wanting one for ridiculing arguments that people have put forward or showing up mistakes they have made.
A good example of the sort of post I was thinking of was this one from Omnivorous:
    randman writes:
    3. The Bible gives a hint at a deeper reality and structure within the universe, and that something had occurred resulting in a nearby land, called Nod, with people in it.
Cain found a worm-hole in the apple?

    I wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then

Re: Question on PNT from brennakimi
Maybe brennakimi should post her first nomination to that PNT (as an additional message). That would illustrate what she really had in mind for the thread.

    Great.
Hmm, maybe my browser is broken. I'm not seeing anything there that looks like a nomination.

Re: Question on PNT from brennakimi / my nominations
I like the idea of the comic POTM, but my main concern would not be people being insulted, but rather people intentionally clowning for a nod. Maybe give it a shot?
Two nominations I would make from last night:
Iblis: "("No eggs in this one," said ZZaxx, slapping her hairy thigh) and so now 50 million years later, we have a rule about that stuff but it's way too late, we're chimps, wages of sin and all that."
and definitely the gem of a list from Parasomnium, including: "4. Does ancestry run in your family?"
Of course the latter was in the Humor Strikes Back thread, so pointing it out in a separate comic thread might be redundant...

Re: Birth of the "Proposed New Topics" concept
    Adminnemooseus writes:
I think we need to start letting some PNT topics sit a while, if we don't feel good about them. Don't feel obligated to try to forward most everthing that is proposed. (and) We can always carry on a discussion on the merits of the topic. If the topic ultimately is promoted, it can be done as just a single message, without the topic evalution discussion (which in the case of the cited, I had decided to leave in the released form).
    AdminNosy writes:
I also think that we don't have to "leave it to" one admin to handle a topic. There seems to be a sort of "politeness" that says that should be done. Anyone should comment and anyone can promote. If one decides not to another may.
    jar writes:
I like the current system. I see no problem with a topic being held up for review and modification. I would like to see more direction and suggestions when the topic is reviewed though.
    Adminnemooseus writes:
The primary purpose of the PNT process is to get an opening message and topic title that clearly defines the theme of the topic. To at least get the topic off to a good start. Hopefully this would help the quality of the topic as it progressed, and also help moderation efforts. I just wish that the general membership put more effort into keeping in touch with the topic theme. It's tough at best, for the admins to control topic drift, if the membership won't contribute self-moderation....(and) A good topic going bad is bad enough. A bad topic going good is even worse. I really hate to see post of the month caliber messages being buried in bad topics, and/or being in topics where they are off-theme. (and) As opposed to some other forums, here at messages are not edited for content by the admins, nor are topics or messages deleted.
I personally think that we should get rid of old topics in our database that have been discussed by no longer active members. Percy can always keep his old database on a disc somewhere, but I believe that we should weed out old topics that are no longer relevant to current discussions. Why keep them around on the public forum? Lets have a relevant and current topic database that members can access...(some older threads should be kept, but certainly not all of them!
Administrators---I started a new topic on PNT promotions in the private forum. Please give me some feedback there.

Re: Question on PNT from brennakimi
Brennakimi, maybe we can discuss opening a humor forum. The only thing is, what would be the criteria for inclusion in it? Would some of the off-the-wall creationist threads be eligible for it?
Who among us should determine what is funny? (without insulting anyone?)
    forgot to click postydoodle.
And just what is a flippin postydoodle?
    (see what I mean?)
