Other programs?
I searched around a bit for other programs besides HIV and protein-folding, but I couldn't find any.
Any ideas where to look? If we found something related to diabetes, I'm sure I could get my family to hook it up and do some good.
Ben

Re: Other programs?
I know. That's a hard sell though.
It's all about marketing. And the more specific the computations, the easier it is to sell.
So ... if anybody knows of other such sites / projects, I would really appreciate to hear about it.
Thanks!
Ben

Pegged Processors
Somebody tell someone down at the World Community "Grid" that not all computers like having their processor pegged all the time. When they write a feature that lets you run the "Grid" intermittently, or to set the max % of processor taken, then I'll consider reinstalling. In the meantime, I'm tired of hearing my whiny computer fan run constantly. It's loud, abrasive, and really prevents me from relaxing. Not a good feeling, and not at all worth it.
Also, I let the thing run, intermittently over the last week, approximately 2 hours. Even though my machine rates over "100 points", I haven't returned a single result. Apparently the program doesn't like getting interrupted, and keeps restarting results.
That's crappy. Apparently using computer time isn't good enough; it needs uninterrupted computer time. What a waste.

Re: Pegged Processors
If you look at the progress meter you will see that it is not starting over.
Actually, that's the whole reason I believe it's starting over. At points, I've gotten as high as 2.1% done. Only to see that I was at 0.9% another day. Which makes me think the global scheduler thought I wouldn't finish the result and reassigned it. And had me start a new one.
This is why my work computer is set to only run in screen saver mode, so it does't slow down work work.
I had that on for a while, but it just gave me the same fan problem. I'll check out bob_gray's liked thread and see if that helps.
Thanks RAZD.

Re: Pegged Processors
There is a way to throttle down the CPU usage.
Thanks for the link. I was surprised they chose to use an environment variable to switch this on (rather than a registry entry), but...
I'll try this out and see if it helps me out. I wish I was more technically proficient with hardware & BIOS to look into the heat problem. I have checked the fan and some of the more common things, but haven't had any success.
Anyway, thanks again. I'll try to remember to post something up here to say how this trick works for me.
