Welcome Jazzns. Let's make a difference.
For the rest of the EvC members who have not signed up yet: Most of you probably have a ten tonne truck for a computer, where a shopping cart would have done nicely. After all, typing up funny lists of Murphy's laws and playing Tic-Tac-Toe doesn't really take much more computing power than a piece of paper and a pencil, or does it? So maybe, just maybe, it's not such a bad idea to put all those superfluous megabytes, gigaherzes and teraflops* to good use and finally sign up for this. Or must I assume that EvC really stands for Ephemeromorphic vacuous Cretins? No, I wouldn't think so either. Asgara, expect some more team mates in the coming days.
*Well, all right, not teraflops then. But I'm not writing this to be pointed at as someone who wrote 'giga' twice in one sentence, where 'giga' and 'tera' really do look much nicer. My new signature: (Robin, are you paying attention? It hasn't been two weeks. And have you signed up yet?) This message has been edited by Parasomnium, 16-Dec-2005 02:07 PM Did you know that most of the time your computer is doing nothing? What if you could make it do something really useful? Like helping scientists understand diseases? Your computer could even be instrumental in finding a cure for HIV/AIDS. Wouldn't that be something? If you agree, then join World Community Grid now and download a simple, free tool that lets you and your computer do your share in helping humanity. After all, you are part of it, so why not take part in it?

You don't know what what is? The two weeks, or the signing up?

Have you looked at the World Community Grid website? They explain quite clearly what it's all about.

If you divide the point totals by the number of results for each member, and sort them by this ratio, then you get to see who has the best equipment, sort of. I did this with the list RAZD gave above and here is the result:

Fair enough. You will be welcome to the team whenever you're ready.

Dan's Clever Alias writes: If I install a program from some website on my computer that eats memory and bandwidth, I will be fired. Sometimes a sacrifice has to be made, Dan. Look at it this way: you'll get fired, you'll have to sell your house, you'll have to live on the street, where eventually you end up in the gutter, eating road kill and cockroaches. You'll find a used syringe that you stick into your arm to inject the heroin you have bought with your last money. And that's only the good news. The bad news is that you'll contract HIV and you'll die. But another piece of good news is that the one block of data your computer at work was able to finish before it was detected by the system administrator contained the miracle cure for HIV. You won't have died in vain. Did you know that most of the time your computer is doing nothing? What if you could make it do something really useful? Like helping scientists understand diseases? At the time I did my research, Stuyvesant Alumni was ranking 1000th in the category "points generated", we were 1147th. The graph shows the statistics of the last 30 days. The markers are real data, the lines are projections into the future. The vertical line indicates we will intercept them somewhere around the 20th.

RAZD, here's the same kind of analysis for the category "results returned". In this case we have to overtake Proteome Origami. Asgara is right on the mark with her prediction.
Of course, other teams might be closing in on the 1000-barrier also, but on the 19th, we should be among a number of teams competing for the 1000th rank. And seeing our upward mobility, we should easily win. The second graph is our rank 500 target.

IrishRockhoud writes: I'm going to add my second computer to the grid - do I need to start a new profile or can I just add it to my current one? If I remember correctly, when you install the programme on your secondcomputer, you will be asked for your World Community Grid member name. If you enter the same name you're already registered under, another device will be added to your account.
