I emailed Gerald Mayr for permission to use the image.

Re: Picture of the month
Thanks, Modulous: I didn't mean to be unscrupulous (nor did your help make me feel accused). It does bring home the difficulty of remaining aware of digital copyrights.
When I was working as a photojournalist and then newspaper editor, and thus often leafing through proofs and contact sheets, I automatically considered the issue; but now that it is so easy to click-and-use, it is also easy to forget.

Re: Picture of the month
It's not too bad (well in my opinion) using it within a forum, but using on the front page of a website could be an issue. If I get a response from Mayr, I'll submit a new PicOTM to Percy

Re: Picture of the month
I also changed the image to just a link. Generally it is bad form to display images that are on someone elses website. Doing that means that everytime the thread is read there is a bandwidth call to the other guys site. It's also good form to make sure that when you do link to someone elses pictures that full credit, if possible, is given.

If we do get the permission to use it, we can host it here at EvC.

Using search function to search by member ID
Doing a search by member ID seems to often work fine, but sometimes you get zero returns for members who have posted many times. This may be the case of members who have been inactive for quite a while. Example: Search for "Bill Birkeland"
I, however, have just failed to get any returns for a recently active member - "JimBobCarl".

Re: Using search function to search by member ID
Both of those searches work for me.
I seem to recall that my first attempt to search for "Bill Birkeland" failed. That was several days ago. But a few minutes later it worked.
However, I have sometimes had failures in lookups.

Re: Using search function to search by member ID
I just happen to be rewriting this code today. This is all part of a bigger release involving a move to MySQL for the membership database. I'm hopeful that a release can happen around New Year's.

Re: Using search function to search by member ID
When doing an ID search, I usually use the "search for exact name" option and "search all open forums" and "search by messages" and leave the "search words" field blank.
Despite what NWR says above, I now still can't get any returns for either "Bill Birkeland" or "JimBobCarl". A partial name search for "Birkeland" also yields no results. An exact name search for "Bill Birkeland" in the "Geology and the Great Flood" forum yields no results.

I thought you were referring to a search in the membership list. Apologioes for the misunderstanding

Cannot use the l-i-e word?
Admins:
In a recent post, it seems I was not able to use the word "l-i-e." When I did, the system replaced the word with asterisks. Is there a particular reason that this common, English word referring to a noun's (meta)physical location has been banned? I am not allowed to say, "The power of the US government lies with all three branches, co-equally" without resorting to ASCII codes?
Look, I understand your skittishness regarding people calling others "liars" (well, actually, that's a lie...I don't understand the skittishness...I understand that you have it, not the tortured justification you have for it), but you do realize that you have removed from use one of the most common words in the English language, yes?
We're to be censored now?

Rrhain

Thank you for your submission to Science. Your paper was reviewed by a jury of seventh graders so that they could look for balance and to allow them to make up their own minds. We are sorry to say that they found your paper "bogus," specifically describing the section on the laboratory work "boring." We regret that we will be unable to publish your work at this time.

Re: Cannot use the l-i-e word?
Other, more specific words are asterixed out too. Hopefully this will get rid of the broken record feeling that I've had when reading the board recently.

"asterixed out" words / Also board code in titles
I have never seen this. Links to examples?
Adminnemooseus
ps to Percy: I think I've mentioned this before, but here it is again - Re: Board code in titles/subtitles - Sometimes it works, at least for a while, but then later it doesn't work. Example is the use of italics (http://EvC Forum: Archaeopteryx reborn .... again? -->EvC Forum: Archaeopteryx reborn .... again?).
