Who needs a monitor?
You can let it run without the monitor; no?

I'm running a AMD 2800+ with a Gig on it.

Re: Who needs a monitor?
yep, just keep the monitor on the 'hot' machine. You really only need the cpu running: motherboard, ram, hard-drive.

Hmm.... I had to shut down the "old(er)" machine to move the good monitor to the "good" machine. If I reboot it now, without a monitor, how will I know if it is running? It might be a day or two before it reports another result to the grid.
ABE: the good news is: reports of the monitor's death have been greatly exaggerated. It has risen from the dead and is now running normally. (In case of further near-death experiences, it will reamin connected to my secondary machine.)
You can expect results from both of my machines sometime in the New Year.

As long as you don't have it set up to require login at bootup it will go into screensaver mode whether there is a monitor or not. They are idiot savants eh?

Wondering Why NOT More Members?
Would any of the non-members care to discuss why they are not joining? I am really curious as to people's reasonings.

Re: Wondering Why NOT More Members?
Yes, I am in the process of decomissioning my existing home business network ready for my big upgrade in the next week or so. Admittedly it hasbeen the next week or so for the past 4 weeks, but I am getting closer. Once the new systems are in place I will be adding some dual-core muscle to the group

Re: Wondering Why NOT More Members?
Very simple... it will not run on my system (or my gf's). Been there, checked into it, it's impossible.
I find this an interesting venture and I applaud all those doing so that can. One should be careful not to assume those that don't have less than a good reason.
Another reason others may have is an edge of paranoia about running someone else's programs on your own system. In the age of Bush's free reign Orwellian spy machine, that would not be inconceivable.
Since I can't run it, I didn't probe further but I am curious... is there any sense that this data is double checked? This is the age of hackers who like nothing more than to screw things up. What is to prevent a hacker from screwing with science by creating plausible but wholly false results (during or after processing)?

What is the problem? Maybe some technical wizards here can help you.

I don't want to get into a description of my system, let me just say the message from them was that it is not possible at this time.
I'm not much of a computer guy and the last time I had someone here try and talk me through something that was plainly possible I still didn't get it right. So I don't really want to spend time trying to jerry-rig something already said will not work.
Apparently people there are working on (at some point?) creating something I can use, but my guess is it is more likely I'll buy a computer that can use what they already have before then.

Re: Wondering Why NOT More Members?
Fair enough. You will be welcome to the team whenever you're ready.
(Signature not meant to rub it in...)

Did you know that most of the time your computer is doing nothing? What if you could make it do something really useful? Like helping scientists understand diseases? Your computer could even be instrumental in finding a cure for HIV/AIDS. Wouldn't that be something? If you agree, then join World Community Grid now and download a simple, free tool that lets you and your computer do your share in helping humanity. After all, you are part of it, so why not take part in it?

Yes, it is at the least double checked. The same calculations are assigned to two or more similar machines and the results cross checked. Since work units are assigned one at a time, and since they are simply down loaded to a suitable machine where they run independantly until the result is returned, it would be difficult to tamper with the results. In addition, if the results returned do not agree, the work unit is reassigned.
The only things transmitted are the initial calculation to be performed, and the result returned.
