Re: Wondering Why NOT More Members?
the only time you use bandwidth is when downloading new modules and uploading results. the rest of the time it is all just time on your machine alone. {abe}this would be the same usage as general surfing and downloading other things (images on pages, etc) {/abe}
this does tend to leave modules vulnerable, as in when a system crashes all the data on that module is lost. as jar pointed out, there is redundancy built into the master program (on the servers, that distribute the modules) so that ones that don't get returned are reassigned to other machines.
of course you could also work to sign up the other users as well

Re: Wondering Why NOT More Members?
i dunno. something about letting random people use my machine just screams vulnerability to me. i can't afford to replace my machine.

Re: Wondering Why NOT More Members?
um ... as noted before ...
you already do. people who wrote the software are controlling how it is used. companies that provide updated {software\data\patches} are automatically rewriting what your machine uses.
you are probably more vulnerable by having any microsoft product on your machine than by loading this one -- because ms is a common target and is notorious for having backdoors and problems. the recent issue about wmf files is a case in point.
if you are really paranoid on this issue then research is the way to go: there are sites that list virus and malware types and you can search them for this programs vulnerability
this site lists hoaxes: http://vil.mcafee.com/hoax.asp
this site lists viruses: http://vil.nai.com/vil/default.asp
I did a search on there with these results:
Results for 'worldcommunitygrid.org'
Search took 0.02 seconds.
Your search - worldcommunitygrid.org - did not match any documents.
No pages were found containing "worldcommunitygrid.org".
and
Results for 'fightAIDS@home'
Search took 0.02 seconds.
Your search - fightAIDS@home - did not match any documents.
No pages were found containing "fightAIDS@home".
and
Results for 'Proteome Folding'
Search took 0.02 seconds.
Your search - Proteome Folding - did not match any documents.
No pages were found containing "Proteome Folding".
I don't claim this as exclusive in any way, but I also did a search based on microsooft word with this result:
Results for 'microsoft word'
Results 1 - 10 of about 1150. Search took 0.15 seconds
And it then proceeds to list all 1150 (and counting) of the viruses that are associated with that software.
Do you use word? Feel safer?

Re: Wondering Why NOT More Members?
Would any of the non-members care to discuss why they are not joining?
1) I just got around to reading this thread, so I've known about this for a sum total of about ten minutes.
2) My only internet access is at work. If I install a program from some website on my computer that eats memory and bandwidth, I will be fired. It will not matter if I patiently explain that it's for a good cause, or that there is memory and bandwidth to spare, or that really it's not just "some website"... I'll still be fired.

Re: Wondering Why NOT More Members?
An absolutely valid point.
I will suggest that depending on your situation, you might consider a memo to the brass at your workplace. Here are a few key points:
  • The project uses almost no bandwidth. The only time bandwidth comes into play is the short time involved in down loading the task to be worked on and during uploading the results when finished.
  • Computation is a background process and only uses free cycles. Like a screensaver, it does not interfere with applications running.
  • If either computation time or bandwidth are an issue, the program allows them to be independantly and individually scheduled. For example, it can be configured to run only at night or on weekends.
  • A complete record of activity is kept and depending on location, may well qualify as a Chraitable Contribution for tax purposes.

If your position makes it possible, please consider talking to your company about adding all of their machines to the grid. It is a win-win situation, good for them and good for all mankind.

Dan's Clever Alias writes:

Sometimes a sacrifice has to be made, Dan. Look at it this way: you'll get fired, you'll have to sell your house, you'll have to live on the street, where eventually you end up in the gutter, eating road kill and cockroaches. You'll find a used syringe that you stick into your arm to inject the heroin you have bought with your last money. And that's only the good news. The bad news is that you'll contract HIV and you'll die. But another piece of good news is that the one block of data your computer at work was able to finish before it was detected by the system administrator contained the miracle cure for HIV. You won't have died in vain.

Did you know that most of the time your computer is doing nothing? What if you could make it do something really useful? Like helping scientists understand diseases? Your computer could even be instrumental in finding a cure for HIV/AIDS. Wouldn't that be something? If you agree, then join World Community Grid now and download a simple, free tool that lets you and your computer do your share in helping humanity. After all, you are part of it, so why not take part in it?

Re: Wondering Why NOT More Members?
But I'm scared of needles. Instead of jabbing myself with a dirty syringe, could I contract HIV by turning unprotected tricks in a back alley for enough change to buy a Big Mac?
Cuz... y'know, in that case, game on.

Re: Wondering Why NOT More Members?
I've just got myself a new computer, and im in the process of over-clocking it... alot.
So i just need e few days to find out at what speed and memory settings it runs perfectly stable. Otherwise the results I'm sending back will do more harm than good
