But...Jesus?
My sentiments exactly, Modulous. Jesus DOES speak through believers, however. Not all who claim to be Christian are Christian. Some are mere social activists who, although sounding much more humanistic and clever than Dobson or Robinson ever could, are just as liable to lead the flock astray into a secular humanistic philosophy devoid of any real power.
Beware the conservative fundamentalists, to be sure. Beware also the liberal social activists such as Bishop Shelby Spong, a man who has denied the virgin birth of Jesus Christ and who reduces Christianity to a do-good philosophical humanism. Snake oil comes in many flavors!

How far out is the far right?
This article from Sojourners magazine is articulate and well written, IMHO.
Sojourners writes:
Once there was Rome; now there is a new Rome. Once there were barbarians; now there are many barbarians who are the Saddams of this world. And then there were the Christians who were loyal not to Rome, but to the kingdom of God. To whom will the Christians be loyal today?

Gradually it was disclosed to me that the line separating good and evil passes not through states, nor between classes, nor between political parties either, but right through every human heart, and through all human hearts. This line shifts. Inside us, it oscillates with the years. Even within hearts overwhelmed by evil, one small bridgehead of good is retained; and even in the best of all hearts, there remains a small corner of evil. --Alexander Solzhenitsyn, The Gulag Archipelago
