Thanks to all of you.
Now up to 41 devices on the Grid. That still makes us pretty small potatoes compared to some of the big corportate teams, but IMHO a really great reflection on what EvC can do for the world.

Wouldn't it be nice if we could get that number of devices doubled over the next few months? Should be possible, after all we have several thousand members here.

I added my desktop to my profile. I don't think there's any point to adding my work machine, seeing as I might get in trouble and it already runs too many important programs.

First off talk to work to make sure it is okay to use the machine. It may also be possible to sign up others and have the company take a charity credit.

Then, it is possible to set the device profile so that it only operates at night and on weekends (you can set the hours for each day). You'll have to create a profle ( say "work" ) to do it rather than just use the default profile.

Now that the prediction has come true, we must face the question of whether it was a miraculous prophesy, or just a rational interpretation of data. Opinions, anyone?

I have. Of course, I'm such an astronomy geek that I spent days looking at close-ups of Mars and counting little craters a couple of years back.

Re: Stardust
These are two snippets from the Stardust@Home site that I think are slightly suspicious:

In recognition of the critical importance of the Stardust@home volunteers, the discoverer of an interstellar dust particle will appear as a co-author on any scientific paper by the Stardust@home collaboration announcing the discovery of the particle.

Please let us know if you are interested in participating by pre-registering below. We expect to start the search for interstellar dust in the Spring of 2006. We will send out an e-mail announcement at that time.

As I said: "Speaking of April 1st..."

Re: Stardust
I think quite a few EvC members have signed up for that. Unfortunately, the initial reports coming in seem to indicate that instead of having folk search using a microscope for star dust, the researchers will be using lawn rakes and blowers to sweep them up. Both the number of strikes and the size of the particles exceeded everyones expectations.

Pegged Processors
Somebody tell someone down at the World Community "Grid" that not all computers like having their processor pegged all the time. When they write a feature that lets you run the "Grid" intermittently, or to set the max % of processor taken, then I'll consider reinstalling. In the meantime, I'm tired of hearing my whiny computer fan run constantly. It's loud, abrasive, and really prevents me from relaxing. Not a good feeling, and not at all worth it.

Also, I let the thing run, intermittently over the last week, approximately 2 hours. Even though my machine rates over "100 points", I haven't returned a single result. Apparently the program doesn't like getting interrupted, and keeps restarting results.

That's crappy. Apparently using computer time isn't good enough; it needs uninterrupted computer time. What a waste.

This is why my work computer is set to only run in screen saver mode, so it does't slow down work work. I agree that having your cpu maxed is a bit much for a program that is supposedly working in the background. This means it does most of its work when I am off line and during evenings and weekends (all machines are left on at work).

Also, I let the thing run, intermittently over the last week, approximately 2 hours. Even though my machine rates over "100 points", I haven't returned a single result. Apparently the program doesn't like getting interrupted, and keeps restarting results.

Or it just takes longer than that to complete a module. My laptop has completed 59 in just under 21 days. That's 8.5 hours per result on average. I also notice that some take longer than others.

If you look at the progress meter you will see that it is not starting over.

Re: Pegged Processors
There is a way to throttle down the CPU usage. I won't cut and paste the post but it is discussed at length here:

http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=2683

I'm glad you mentioned it because even though my fan is silent I'm not keen on keeping the CPU pegged just from a "wear and tear" point of view.

Now that we broke the 1000 mark what is the next goal? I know that some of the groups have hundreds of computers on the grid so what is our maximum realistic rank with the number of machines we have online?

We arecertainly in striking distance of breaking the 800 mark.
