I agree with pretty much everything else you said in that post but I must take issue with this bit.
If "animals are doing better than we are," then why would we want to stop acting like them?
Besides, if we are the crown of creation then who's to say they aren't acting like us? Anyway, animals do care for more than themselves and their immediate group, although, like us, they may need a bit of time and peaceful circumstance in order to feel compassion for individuals of a different species.
