EVANGELICAL ENVIRONMENTALISM STINGS SENATOR - by Jim Hightower
This was/is in many newspapers etc. Hightower apparently has/had it on his own site, http://www.jimhightower.com/air/archive.asp?page=1, but that site/link is currently down for site renovation work.
I quote (in entirety) the following from 404 Not Found .
DECEMBER 14, 2005
EVANGELICAL ENVIRONMENTALISM STINGS SENATOR - by Jim Hightower
It's obvious to even a casual observer that the Lord works His wonders in mysterious ways. You could ask Jim Inhofe about that.
Inhofe, the right-wing Oklahoma Republican who chairs the Senate environment committee, is the favorite pet of corporate polluters whose industrial emissions scientists cite as the leading cause of global warming. Not only has Inhofe stifled every congressional effort to control these emissions, but he also has called the very idea of corporate involvement in global warming "the greatest hoax ever perpetrated on the American people."
So far, Inhofe has been able to ignore science, but - what, ho! - now he finds himself confronted by a formidable and surprising new force: Evangelical Christians. Within the National Association of Evangelicals - representing 45,000 churches serving 30 million members - is a burgeoning "Evangelical Environmental Network" that is taking seriously the Biblical mandate for humans to be good stewards of the earth. Indeed, these mainstream evangelicals are now considering a draft policy statement calling on Congress to pass mandatory controls on global warming emissions.
Good God Almighty, you can almost hear Inhofe shout! In his political career, he has always touted himself as a devout evangelical, and he certainly did not expect this curve ball from God. So far, his reaction has been to assail the messengers. Sticking with his corporate sponsors, Inhofe calls the claim that Christians should work to stop activities harmful to God's creation, "something very strange," and he dismisses the evangelicals' Biblical citations for their work, saying: "You can always find in Scriptures a passage to misquote for almost anything."
The evangelicals don't choose to call their work environmentalism, preferring the phrase "creation care." But forget the labels - it's the message that's important. Even if Inhofe doesn't want to hear it, you can get the word at The Evangelical Environmental Network.
Apparently there is a significant splitting from the neo-con mainstream by a significant body of evangelical Christians.
Offhand, the link supplied at the end seems to provide quite a resorce of futher reading materials.

Well, it's about time.
I'd welcome a Green Christian cavalry; I've long been puzzled about the lack of one. I see these folks describe themselves as an educational ministry. I'm still poking around at their site & links to see what they do.
I found some of my old favorites, though:
Psalm 19:1-4: "The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge. There is no speech or language where their voice is not heard. Their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world."
Psalm 96:1, 11-12: "Sing to the LORD a new song; sing to the LORD, all the earth . . . Let the heavens rejoice, let the earth be glad; let the sea resound, and all that is in it; let the fields be jubilant, and everything in them. Then all the trees of the forest will sing for joy."
Amen enough for you, jar?

By their fruits shall ye know them...Eureka!
Well, shiver me timbers! Ask and ye shall receive...do you suppose this thread caused a reawakening of...naw, no way.
But credit where credit is due, and my hands are smarting from applause. From the Washington Post:
Evangelicals urge action on global warming
Bless 'em, one and all. Here's a brief excerpt:
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A group of 85 evangelical Christian leaders on Wednesday backed legislation opposed by the White House to cut carbon dioxide emissions, kicking off a campaign to mobilize religious conservatives to combat global warming.
The group which included mega-church pastors, Christian college presidents, religious broadcasters and writers, also unveiled a full-page advertisement to run in Thursday's New York Times and a television ad it hopes to screen nationally.
"With God's help, we can stop global warming for our kids, our world and our Lord," the television spot declared.
The campaign by evangelicals coincided with a call on Wednesday by a leading U.S. think tank for the United States to take immediate steps to fight global warming, including working with other nations to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Amen.

I will give them a big hurrah too. It is a move long overdue. I will notice that the article said Bush's big time promoters are absent, but the fact that this issue is finally being dealt with by the Evangalical community at all is signifigent.

Genesis: 2,15: And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.
Well, since the original gardener got kicked out, SOMEBODY'S got to tend to it. Glad they finally came around.

Creavolution, from the "What would jesus Drive? a change for the better?" topic
Creavolution started the What would jesus Drive? a change for the better? topic, which I closed down in deference to this topic. S/he has not moved the content here, so I will. Offhand, the link supplied seems to contain information not previously presented.
Creavolution writes:
BBC NEWS | Americas | US evangelicals launch green plan
link to a news story about the christain backlash against bush'd whitehouse demanding action to prevent global warming.
an insightful development to be welcomed? or cynical recruitment drive?

Environmentalists?
The start of this thread was that conservatives are not environmentalists and liberals are. The question was asked why that is so, as if it is.
I see the most outspoked 'environmentalists' driving cars more than anyone else. (California) I see the most outspoken of the outspoken, the Hollywood 'elite', talking environment as they walk to their private jets... PETA members screaming on their way to a steakhouse or a huge banquet. I saw an 'environment' President cut down a century old tree on the rim of the Grand Canyon to take a picture. An extreme 'environmentalist' vice president endanger a whole river system for a picture. Farmers, who live by being real environmentalists, have been put out of business by know-it-all city dwelling environmentalists who think their food comes from the grocery store.
Does industry pollute? Some do and some don't. Most heavy industry, which we have very little anymore because of environmental regulations causing out of control costs, will pollute. How many liberal environmentalists buy cars, or boats or houses or appliances?
Environmentalism and realism must go hand in hand.
The conservatives, religious or not, are not for dirty water or air or poor education nor any of the other things the left accuses them of. The conservatives, religious or not, think that action is more important than words.
Both political parties bow down to interest groups. Both sides are run by money. The big difference is that the conservatives spend their own money and the left spends the money of others.
I'm not surprised that real Christians are pushing environmental issues, they always have... maybe not as a group but as individuals.
Statistics can 'prove' almost anything, but I remember right after the Mt. St. Helens eruption that there was more pollution put into the air by that eruption than had been put into the air by industry in the last 100 years.
By the way, we had 17 inches of 'global warming' here yesterday!
