At the below link, there is a list of 90 topics that I am proposing be deleted from the various forums. The reason for these deletions is to cut down on the server storage requirements (for which "Admin" is paying the bills).
Proposed Forum Topics To Be Deleted
There will be more topics proposed further down the line, but this is the beginning.
Essentially, in the database, I flagged many topics as candidates for deletion.
Then, in general, I filtered for those topics that have had no messages posted from 4/1/02 on.
For the "Announcements" and "Suggestions" forums, the topics were filtered for those having had no messages posted from 11/1/02 on.
Other certain topics were also specially selected, to be on the list (ie. I picked on minnemooseus topics a bit extra).
I plan on making personal copies of all topics, before they are deleted. Others are certainly invited to do the same.
Objections to specific topics being deleted may be addressed by:
1) Reactivating the topic by posting new messages to it.
2) Commenting in this topic.
or
3) Contacting Adminnemooseus at the below e-mail address.
As I see it, it will be at least a week before I starting deleting anything. Warning, at this topic, will be issued when the deletions are eminent.
OK, let's see what happens.

I am not going to be responsible for brining up more christian influence just for the sake of remaining on the board. Maybe I should accept that I agree with GOULD. I do not see how it makes sense to selectively delete posts once the policy otherwise had been maintained. My interest will IMMEDIATELY dwindle as soon as if this happens. This is not a "threat" or intention but the reason I dedicated so much effort and time here was becuase of the stable nature of the reporting. Without it I may simply not choose to engage others here and maybe even stop all c/e postings. The problem is not
"deleting" per say but having already attempted to follow administrative constraint on JUDGING others (nos like behavior) an ABSOLUTE as opposed to self imstituted restraint becomes obvious and objective that can be taken as discrimination. This is an EvC Forum and not a simple discussion group. The challenge really as administor has been to keep flaming and slamming down to which the board does so much better than others it is even funny. My mind will just not be here in this case. Bye bye or good luck the choice seems to being taken from me.
The point of keeping the posts enables others at any time to join in by finding these little cited posts. I have not hard feelings.
Just because I might not notice some of my posts deleted does not mean others wont. I have been wonderfully surpised when others bring up stuff I thought was long gone. That is some of the magic of the net. The threads ARE not of equal quality. It was asked to stop setting up new topics. So instead I dug into old ones only to find admins after playing double posting games to consider canceling older posts that had not been responded to . This is visible and unnacctepable to me. I think this is what is called "hosting-up" as defined on the "new" by origins standards E_V_c cComunity. If the process was transparent it is ok but when visible that is no reason to take adminstration to "another" level. I have no interest in posting theMOOSE the pet shrew of an ice age I do not squirrel away every time the host thinks he is golden. I would not be interested in posting there EITHER. The black background works. KEEP IT TILL C/e has a more mainstream presence. IT will some day GOULD's biology can also be puresued non-linearly without millions of years but it is much harder. THe net web is a nonlinear medium. I do not have the time to start all of these postings over some where else.

My understanding, from e-mail communications from "Admin" (aka Percy), was that he wished to explore methods of keeping site costs under control. As I understand the situation, the volume of the sites server storage requirements is such that "Admin" is now paying extra to maintain the site.
All administrative parties find it distasteful, to do any deletion of content. The question is, is it needed, to keep cost considerations practical.
I'm not the one paying the bills. Only "Admin" is paying the bills. I await input from "Admin" on this matter.

That's fine. If P thinks he pays too much for me he may have decided it is not worth the possibility of c/e going mainstream. I am not saying i will go, but if I am able to see any effect elsewhere I may indeed. I really am planning a move back to school and I may not have as much free time as it is anyway. The conclusion I have in mind will take more than the interesting ecletic internationalism this board possesses. I would not be averse from deletions if categorizations were made more "free form" by having the larger topic divisions realined with the actual posting history...
I did notice that after I was able to read my way to the board often rather than finding that others had been reading or were led into the same pathway I took they simply took to posting immediately on top (within a group). It took me some time to break the category barriers so that I can significantly post in ANY area.
If one had an adaptive managment program that could search the titles and subloop newly formed ones within already existing ones based on some number of matching words then one could maitain a temperory "reorientation" file that presuablly would cause for the adminsistrator MORE mem space but is only maintained untill all the parties to the "automatic looping" of a topic thread become verified of having found the new loop location. Then this temp file can be deleted.
As posters learn the angular momentum of this system if implemneted one may be able to decrease the excess posting simply by making known where the most traveled paths are. To cut back as greyhound does (with what counts as local and what round trip does not seem to work.

This is what I am saying. The work is too large to start trimming without taking even my practical considerations into account. Obviously the one footing the bill as the right to bear no harm. Gouldilocks and three bears will have to continue somewhere else then.

--I'm in agreement, this doesn't seem like it was a walk on the beach to compile such a list. They seem appropriate, however if I may make an additional suggestion:
--Instead of deleting the contents right out of oblivion, delete them off the server as is, but pack them into a .zip file and leave that for online access for a short time. Those interested in keeping them as a reference (a benefit for those who are regulars here at evcforum) can download it. Something along that line would be nice.
--If not..then oh well.

Of the initial 90 topics proposed for deletion, there are a total of 383 messages, or an average of 4.25 per topic. 23 topics have only 1 message. 86 of the topics are a single page, and the other 4 only go 2 pages. One of the 2 pagers is wmscott's "Book Nook" topic, which lives on in it's entirity, in another forum.
As all the topics are quite short, they are easily saved in a non-zipped form (besides, I don't offhand know how to go about zipping and posting them). I will try to compile a listing of links, for easy access and saving of the topics.
Nothing is yet eminent, but I expect that I would start with the "Announcements" topics. I have already saved them all to my hard drive, a process that took, as I recall, only 15 minutes or less.
I expect that all the "Announcements" and "Suggestions" would survive online, in a more condenced form. That should save storage space, and also make the information more accessable (you'd only have to deal with one topic for each forum).
Added by edit: The "Announcements" topics, at Proposed Forum Topics To Be Deleted, are now clickable links.

You know, the 90 proposed deletions is looking like trying to bail the Titanic with a leaky bucket (see http://EvC Forum: Site Usage -->EvC Forum: Site Usage).
By the way, the sometimes excesive use of the "quote reply" function is starting to piss me off. There's no calling for quoting the (possibly long) numericly previous message (you can usually scroll just up the page to see it). Quoting excesses are probibly taking up significant amounts of storage space.
And people, try to get the quote structures (UBB code) right in your messages. This also ties into the use of the "quote reply" function.
Lastly, I've deleted the "Free For All" porn spam topic (camsrock69's "my cam site"). Probibly should have banned the poster also, but I guess I needed to do that before wiping out the offending topic.

We reduced disk usage by about 5 MB last night - if this was you, keep up the great work!

The only thing I did was to complete the "quote reply" business page processing. No topics or messages were deleted (at least not by me, on purpose). Will investigate further.

Hmmm, disk space usage went down another MB last night. I wonder if it might be the result of getting rid of the reply-quote link that's attached to every message.

Just curious, how much space does the forum rquire these days?
Also, is it a MySQL database? If so, why not compress the tables? You can get 40-70% space savings though you end up with read-only tables. Still, it ought to work fine for some of the older threads.
