Isn't the "(Igor and Lithodid-Man only)" part a pretty good clue that you shouldn't be posting there, ...
NosyNed has just demonstrated that it is not a sufficient clue, in Message 37.

OMG, I guess I did. And now no one will believe I was going to come in on crashe's side that it was too easy to miss it.
Thanks.

I agree with crashfrog about changing the style, or do whatever to make the great debate threads a little more obvious. While I do not participate anywhere nearly as often as crashfrog, I do read a lot on this forum. Because people on one side of the debate grossly overpopulate this forum, I only feel like responding when something really interests me.
http://EvC Forum: How do we know about natural selection? (Igor and Lithodid-Man only) -->EvC Forum: How do we know about natural selection? (Igor and Lithodid-Man only) That message by igor literally gave me the itch to respond (for obvious reasons). The point is since I read more than I write, sometimes it's too easy for me to forget which part of the forum I'm reading. In the case of igor's entertaining yet sad post I referenced, the only thing that stopped me from responding was NosyNed's deleted post right after igor's post. With that said, is there a way at all for those of us not cool enough to be in a great debate to respond someone in one? The itch hasn't gone away.

Although we try to stress making the subtitles appropriate to the post, maybe in the Great Debate the subtitle should stay the same within a thread.
Great Debate: Igor and Lithodid-Man only This would show up in the all topics listing. Since there are only two debaters in the thread, it shouldn't affect the debaters.

Admin PD, you state
Mimcry and/or commentary on an opponents debating style or lack there of gets into the personal realm and doesn't further the topic of discussion I fully agree, however, where does this leave accusations of being a sectarian bigot? After bringing Rangers and Celtic into the debate, iano then states
I'm curious as to your taking it as sectarian. Its as if you imagine that sectarianism doesn't exist. Well it does Trixie. And the UVF merchant is asked to pick up the IRA guy who has been set upon by the RUC. Your a celt Trixie. A green as green celt. They exist. And you in green - for you know what they are like are asked to pick up an blue as blue. my bold Note the part in bold. I'm being accused of being a sectarian bigot because iano has decided, in his own words
your from Edinbourgh right. You might be a Ranger or a Celt. Your a Celt for now. How does this gel with the forum guidelines which state
8. Avoid any form of misrepresentation and
10. .....Avoid abusive, harassing and invasive behavior. Avoid needling, hectoring and goading tactics. ?

Unfortunately as a Hoosier, the terms Ranger and Celt and the colors used by iano don't mean anything to me in a postive or negative sense.
In the original analogy I read it as an attempt to make the parable more real for you with something you are familiar with.
iano writes: You might be a Ranger or a Celt. Your a Celt for now. Given two sides, I read it as he made you a Celt for the purpose of the story, not calling you one personally. He seemed to be trying to connect the relationship between the Jews and the Samaritans with something you apparently are familiar with today.
iano writes: Well that was the relationship between a Jew and a Samaritan in those days. His analogy doesn't mean anything to me because I obviously don't understand the relationship between Rangers and Celts. I'm sorry you were offended by his words and that I don't have the knowledge to deal with it appropriately. But if the terms were used as a negative tactic, they should not be used as such in the future. An admin with more knowledge of the Rangers and Celts would be more suited to decide if action is required concerning the posts in question. (Message 81 and Message 86)

It's a pretty distasteful post - you could argue that it's an attempt to make an analogue but it seems to me (at least) that it's a sleazy attempt to belittle trixie.
And then we have this bit of casual racism

Guess I'd better agree quickly before I crash an exclusive party, too, and diminish my agreement's force.
How about color? Couldn't the "A and B Only" appear in a distinctive color, say red or yellow? AbE: Reading back-thread, I see this has already been suggested. It's a good idea. Color is an underutilized info medium. This message has been edited by Omnivorous, 04-20-2006 07:07 PM

I've already apologized to Trixie for my lack of knowledge which prevents me from understanding how this belittles Trixie.
Another admin will have to decide if action is required. Sorry.

And the casual racism is beyond your scope as well?
Or I take it you agree that orthodox jews treat gentiles as dogs? oh must go, I see a blackman outside and you know how they like to steal anything that's not nailed down.

I've commited no wrong against you, so I suggest you not take out your frustration with iano on me.

You have it on the button AdminPD.
Rangers and Celtic are respectively Scottish football teams who are followed by predominantly (possibly completely) by respectively Protestants and Catholics and wear respectively blue and green football apparel. As same city teams, the matches between them are the most intensely important games of the year (especially given that either team usually ends up winning the league). The rivalary is not simply football but has a very strong sectarian element to it. Rangers for example only repealed there Protestant-only signing policy for players in 1989. An extreme Celtic supporter is more likely to kick an extreme Ranger supporter than pick him up from the gutter and care for him. And vice versa. More below if you were interested Just a moment... So I don't know why Trixie is getting so upset. It seems patently obvious that I wasn't accusing her of being one or the other. Her subsequent statement that she was well aware of the divide between a Jewish priest and a Samaritan makes her missing the reason for the analogy all the more confusing. Needless to say I regret the offence caused in not making it crystal clear for her. I just didn't see the problem. I won't make the same mistake with her (you trixie, if you are reading this) again. I'm sorry. And thanks PD for stepping in. It allowed the opportunity for explanation and apology This message has been edited by iano, 21-Apr-2006 01:27 AM

You're welcome.
Now you know what types of characters to avoid in your analogies. I'm sure you noticed that offense was also taken with your characterization of the Orthodox Jews. You should also avoid those types of characterizations in the future. Thanks for your cooperation. This situation is now concluded and not open to any more discussion.
