Or an atheist could lack belief in any theory of origins. Or s/he could believe that the aliens you mention always existed. What an atheist can believe is limited only by the imagination, and the prerequisite condition that the belief system is free of gods.

I think that's a better description of skepticism. Plenty of atheists have dogmatic political and societal beliefs, myself included.

I wouldn't be surprised if the majority of atheists don't believe in gods because that would conflict with their religious beliefs (e.g. Buddhism). Maybe not so much in the West, though.
