1. Why don't you believe in the divine?
The accidental nature of life.
2. Do you believe in anything without evidence?
There's lots I believe on authority without actual inspection of any evidence whatsoever.

Not that I am aware of.
You accept nothing on authority?

Only if it is accompanied by a compelling arguement involving either a great evidentiary and logical reasoning or a weapon bigger than any in my arsenal.
You must be a busy guy, having to go over all that evidence in every field.

Re: wow
That's because all the pages with the word atheist on it, are actually theist's pages talking about atheism.
Call back when you have read them all.
Who cares about what's popular?
What matters is the truth.

Re: Why should an atheist believe?
The key to me seems to be that there are some who look for answers to questions while others question answers
This sounds like you're saying it's matter of individual temperament. Some people are born to be believers while others are born skeptics. There might be something to that.
Edited by robinrohan, : typo.

Re: Why should an atheist believe?
I believe that people can be taught to question, but it is not easy work and it does require tools that many people don't have.
Couldn't we turn this around and say, "many people can be taught to believe, but it is not easy work and it does require tools that many people don't have"?

Re: Why should an atheist believe?
What are the tools needed to turn someone into a believer?
I don't know. I'm not a believer. Your statement suggested that it was easier to be a believer than an atheist. I would think it would be equally hard or easy in either case.
Edited by robinrohan, : added "in either case."

Re: Why should an atheist believe?
Considering that the vast majority of the world's population of humans believes in some sort of divine entity or god, I would be inclined to think that believing comes quite easily to us.
Theoretically speaking, I don't see why it should though.
To me the easiest thing in the world is to be a non-believer, because the world seems to me to scream out, "Accident!"
I would argue against this idea that the believer's way is the easy and lazy way, and the hard, brave, and rugged way is the way of the non-believer.
I suppose there are people to whom the world screams out just as emphatically, "Design!"

Re: Why should an atheist believe?
Is fun the motivation? Attempting solve unsolvable riddles?
It is if you've already made up your mind that the riddle cannot be solved.

Re: Why should an atheist believe?
But if one part of the riddle includes the possibility of God then 'you' might not be the one who solves it. He can play too surely?
Who knows? Not me.
