Same with "health issues" - syphilis and gonorrhea were rampant back before 1950. Those stats have been posted here, too. Abstinence-only ain't workin'! Five pregnant eighth-graders in the school my wife works at, of a class with a hundred or so girls, who've been through the show-'em-diseased-genitalia sort of abstinence-only sex ed, pretty much confirms it for me. And those five were just the ones who carried babies to term/didn't go off to live at Aunt Debbies' house.

Re: The Pill
The OP says nothing about pregnancies, it's about STDs. Those have increased dramatically over the last four decades or so, stuff the general population never even heard of before.
In the United States the incidence rate of all syphilis has varied from a high of 447.0 in 1943 to a low of 26.5 in 1995.
http://uhavax.hartford.edu/bugl/histepi.htm#syph
The overall incidence of gonorrhea has steadily declined in the U.S. since 1975
Columbia University Irving Medical Center AIDS wasn't in North America 40 years ago. Chlamydia wasn't recognized as an STD then.

Re: You are making my case for me.
And H5N1 influenza - "bird flu" - didn't exist ten years ago. SARS either. The incidence nearly has to rise if it starts at zero. What point are you driving at, Faith? "STD" just replaced "VD" because nobody took Latin anymore - "venereal" didn't mean anything if you hadn't.

Re: More evidence of the Failure of Abstinence programs.
where the older generation of STDs known as venereal diseases is mentioned.
And shown by governmental, official statistics to be in dramatic decline since the 1940's.

Re: What has NEVER worked.
If we keep going the way we've been going the nation is just going to self-destruct, accumulating diseases that eventually science can't cope with sufficiently, And those sinful keepers of chickens are promting bird flu, besides: God's Judgement (TM) on Chick-Fil-A and Colonel Sanders......

Re: Quarantine ha!
I'm fascinated by the this. Are there any examples of this ever being done for any disease in the US?
Up into the 1950's such measures were used for polio, measles, and a few other diseases. I'm not aware of any since, though.

Oh yeah.....the Hawaiian island of Molokai was a leper colony up into the 50's. Not a real big tourist destination back then....
