It's nice to take a break and read some fiction. I thoroughly enjoyed this easy read; it took no more than 5 hours to run though it.
The first 75 pages or so were focused on character development. One of the main ideas here was relevant here--the main character, Pi, practiced the Hindu, Islam, and Christian faiths. From this angle, I thought the first 75 pages were interesting (but nothing ground-breaking).
I found the rest of the plot of the book to be very compelling, especially given the "author's note" at the beginning of the book which suggested the story was based on true events.
I found the book to be uncluttered--there were just enough characters, just enough events, and just enough thoughts. There was a balance between all of those that worked well for me.
The book also evoked some sense of timelessness and lack of chronology. I found that feeling to be appealing.
It was a nice book for a day-long break.

excellent read
Yeah, I posted about this a couple years ago. There's a lot of good humor about the mix of religions in the early chapters, and once you get past the hurricane part it becomes a real page turner. I enjoyed it very much.

I thoroughly enjoyed it for the reasons you mention. Very... crisp. Just the right pace and you found yourself page turning in the subtle sense of the phrase. Turning the page in unexcited expectation. A little gem.

Life of Pi
Yes, I enjoyed this novel too. It won our main literary prize (the Booker) a few years back, and it remains the only Booker prize winner that I've actually read.
The only thing I'm not sure about is the twist at the end. I won't reveal what it is (I don't want to spoil anglagard's enjoyment), but I found it a little deflating. It was a clever literary device, forcing you to rethink what had gone before, but coming at the end of the page-turning adventure in the boat, where you really got to like the main character, it jarred a little. I can't really explain my problem without giving away the ending, but I'd be interested to hear what others think.

Re: Life of Pi
Thoroughly enjoyed this, all the way thru'.
I liked the ending, but now that I think about it, I'm not sure why.
