Author | Topic: How Likely Is It Jesus' Got Married | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
igor_the_hero Inactive Member |
How likely is it that Jesus was married and his line continued? I personally find it extremely unlikely. If you look in The Bible, there sre 4 accounts of his life and they make no mention of it. I just want some people's opinions of whether or not they think it could be true.
Edited by igor_the_hero, : No reason given. Edited by Adminnemooseus, : Changed "Maried" to "Married" in topic title.

In search I don't see any DaVinci Code threads and am not aware of any. Is anyone else aware of any? I will await a response before promoting this.
Perhaps you would want to expand this topic to include overall credibility of the code, since the answer to your question has a lot to do with that.

I think the topic could be promoted as it is, but with a very simplfied question.
Leaving out the Davinci code nonsense, the member could just ask "how likely is it that Jesus was married?" I think this simple version would work, but I leave it up to your good self. AdminBrian.

Thanks, AdminBrian. Since the likelyhood of his being married is pretty much representative stuff in the Davinci Code, I'll promote it as stated in Faith and Belief. Likely folks who are interested in the marriage question will want to talk about the code anyhow.

Hi igor,
I have to admit that I haven't read the da Vinci Code; actualy I read a few pages and it was like a Tom Clancy novel so I gave it back to my public library, and told them to purchase decent writers in future. What I really want to know is - what are the implications of Jesus having married? What are the theological implications? That Jesus had a cock? Is that it? Is that why the Churches are up against it? Mick

No, the churches are against it for what it would mean. Jesus is the only perfect person.(Born of a virgin, remember?) So what would it mean if he had kids? It just doesn't match up with what the Bible says that marriage is to be displayed and stuff.

I'm really not getting anything out of your post at all. You're going to have to flesh it out a lot more.
Igor_the_hero writes: Jesus is the only perfect person.(Born of a virgin, remember?) So what would it mean if he had kids? Just off the top of my head, I'd say it would "mean" absolutely nothing if He had kids. Is having kids some kind of "imperfection"? How would having kids change His teachings?
It just doesn't match up with what the Bible says that marriage is to be displayed and stuff. So, what does the Bible say "that marriage is to be displayed"? What does the Bible say that would make any difference in whether or not Jesus was married? Give us something to work with here. Help scientific research in your spare time. No cost. No obligation. Didn't Jesus' Dad have a kid -- out of wedlock and with a woman married to another?

Just to throw a random argument out there that I probably won't defend....
If Jesus had a child, then that would imply that he had sex. In order to have sex, one must be a sexual being with sexual desires. If one has sexual desires, then surely they lust after other people. And we know what the Bible says about lust: Job 31:11-12: For lust is a shameful sin, a crime that should be punished. It is a devastating fire that destroys to hell. It would wipe out everything I own. and Matthew 5:28: But I say, anyone who even looks at a woman with lust in his eye has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

quote:That is probably some of why Christianity has a problem with the idea of Jesus being married. Oddly enough, sex within marriage is not a sin (to violate God's law). Lust is not a sin either. I feel the crime referred to in Job (which is a fictional work) is adultery, not lust.
Job 31:9 "If my heart has been enticed by a woman, Or I have lurked at my neighbor's doorway, 31:10 May my wife grind for another, And let others kneel down over her. 31:11 "For that would be a lustful crime; Moreover, it would be an iniquity punishable by judges. IMO 3:19 is a creative way of saying if he had sex outside his marriage. The law of God holds actions accountable, not thoughts. The verse in Matthew
Matthew 5:28: But I say, anyone who even looks at a woman with lust in his eye has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
is a teacher who was teaching people to be aware that their thoughts can lead to actions, warning them to be in control of their thoughts. The body can only do what the mind tells it. Hebrews just says that Jesus was without sin:
Heb 4:15 For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin. Desiring (lust) someone elses wife and acting upon it (adultery) is a sin. Desiring someone who is single and available for marriage is not a sin. So desiring a single woman, marrying her and having children is not a sin. IMO, Jesus having children shouldn't change his teachings. It depends.
If Jesus is a historical figure, and was not considered a mamzer, then the likelyhood that he was married would be very high. If Jesus was for what ever reason considered to be a mamzer (for example, if rumors about his father not being Joseph was around during his life time), then he would be 'ritualistically impure' , and would only allowed to marry another bastard.. which would reduce his chance of being married. On the other hand, if that was true, he would not have been allowed in the temple at all, and other stories about Jesus had him going to the temple.

It just doesn't match up with what the Bible says that marriage is to be displayed and stuff. i think the whole issue is just silly. ok, so jesus has to be perfect if he's to be a sacrifice for our sins. central to christianity, ok, got it. being born of a virgin doesn't have anything to do with that, at all. that bit is to make him the literal son of god. what does his own virginity have to do with anything? it's not a sin to get married. it's not a sin to have children with your wife. every other major jewish leader had a wife, and usually kids. moses was married, aaron was married. all of the patriarchs were married. david was married. the idea of chastity as it relates to holiness is utterly foriegn to judaism. so where'd it come from in christianity? and why no depiction of christ being married? an unmarried man hanging around 12 other guys and a few unmarried women would have looked a little weird in 1st century judea. ...but it wouldn't have looked weird to the hellenistic greek audiences reading the gospels.
