Re: Another analysis of the mind of Robin
All a nihilist is is someone who believes there is no ultimate meaning to life. Most of you all here are nihilists, but you bury it under meanings you invent.
Well, Christianity is nihilistic as well, so we are all in the same boat.
Don't see what you can possibly mean by this. Christianity gives an ultimate meaning to life. The opposite of nihilism.

It will be, in a hundred years, as if you never existed. You are of no more significance than a roach crawling across the floor.

Your point UTTERLY refuted.
To not strive for anything, or to not seek happiness simply because there is no biological reason to is apathy and laziness to the extreme. To not want to define a meaning for yourself because you can’t see the point, or that there is no all powerful external authority telling you what to do and feel, is just sad.

Re: Same
I just can't handle the "wonder of life" syndrome.
Yes, that makes more sense of the issue than "boasting" does, to my mind anyway. It's like I feel like throwing up at the song "We are the world, we are the children" and other such mindlessness.

But you're not simply insinuating you are right. You are putting yourself forward as superior to others because you beleive as you do. But the worst you can point out is a few statements that may be exaggerated.
But I'd say that your view is even more skewed. We are ordinary humans. We operate on the ordinary human level. Most of us will not, cannot, be one of those exceptional people who has a major effect on human history. But we can have an effect at our own level. Why is that no good ? Why not just be content with being human ?‘

There is a tendency among non-believers, in their eagerness to prove to believers that one can be very happy, fulfilled, and of high moral character without any religious belief, to exaggerate their qualities and the qualities of their experiences--thus the boasting.
I agree with you that there is a desire among some atheists to prove happiness, fulfillment, etc. I'm sure I'm guilty of this myself. Yet, how can you possibly know that these people you speak of are exaggerating?
Ned in another thread spoke approvingly of a "healthy ego," but I do not find a sentimental view of oneself and of life to be healthy. I think it very unhealthy.
So what?

This argument is not about me. The only personal part was my being nauseated by boasts.
But we can have an effect at our own level. Why is that no good ? Why not just be content with being human ?
There's nothing wrong with it--as long as we realize it. Then we can live more authentically. But if we have a sentimental vision of ourselves, we're living in a dream-bubble. We're not experiencing the quiddity of life.

I don't know for certain. I just suspect it.
So what?
Well, in the long run you're right: it doesn't matter. But I wasn't speaking of the long run.

It is just because you have used a very simplistic definition of Nihilism.

Christianity
essentially removes meaning from earthly life.

Re: Another analysis of the mind of Robin
According to Nietzsche. Ha ha ha.
There's nothing nihilistic about Christianity concerning this life OR the next.

Re: Same
These comments about my secret Christianity are very amusing.
But you aren't a secret Christian!
Why do you feel the need for a higher power to exist? What do you think is missing in your life? Are you needing a good woman to clear your mind?
Sit on uncle Brian's knee and he'll help you.
Brian.

Of course it's about you. Just becuase your boasting is phrased in a negative way - attacking others - doesn't make it any less boastful.

There's nothing wrong with it--as long as we realize it. Then we can live more authentically.
Well then, there goes the only possible basis for your accusations of dishonesty. You'd need to show someone claiming to be more than human to back that up now.

It's not that we feel the need for a higher power. Christians are just searching for truth like everyone else. We have just come to a different conclusion that you have.
I could ask; why do you fear a higher power?

Everybody is entitled to my opinion.

And I have a very high strike rate!!
It's not that we feel the need for a higher power. Christians are just searching for truth like everyone else.
You could have asked me the Truth, it would have saved you a lot of time.
We have just come to a different conclusion that you have.
You haven't looked hard enough then.
I could ask; why do you fear a higher power?
How can I fear something that doesn't exist?
