And on 58 federal counts, starting with tax evasion.
linky And the judge was Miles Davis, which is kind of nice in itself.

It's getting better:
The Pensacola paper reports:
Of the 58 charges, 44 were filed against Kent Hovind and his wife, Jo, for evading bank reporting requirements as they withdrew $430,500 from AmSouth Bank between July 20, 2001, and Aug. 9, 2002. At the couple's first court appearance Thursday before U.S. Magistrate Judge Miles Davis, Kent Hovind professed not to understand why he is being prosecuted. Some 20 supporters were in the courtroom. "I still don't understand what I'm being charged for and who is charging me," he said.
Over Kent Hovind's protests, the judge took away his passport and guns Hovind claimed belonged to his church. Hovind argued that he needs his passport to continue his evangelism work. He said "thousands and thousands" are waiting to hear him preach in South Africa next month. Guns that belong to the church? WTF?

Re: building permits?
Certainly, I think nearly everyone at one time is upset with some governmental regulation, but not bothering to get a permit? I find that strange, too. There was a news item somewhere (??!!) within the last month about a large church built by a congregation in Alabama(?) without the aid of architects, engineers, or building permit - the pastor builds houses on the side. The roof collapsed the Thursday night before the grand opening Sunday services. Building permits do have a purpose...

This just in:
Hovind's attorney, Assistant Public Defender Kafahni Nkrumah, told U.S. Magistrate Judge Miles Davis at a hearing Monday that his client did not want to enter a plea because he does not believe the United States, the Internal Revenue Service and the U.S. Attorney's Office "have jurisdiction in this matter." When pressed by Davis to enter a plea of either guilty or not guilty, Hovind said he wished to enter a plea of "subornation of false muster." When asked where he lived, Kent Hovind replied, "I live in the church of Jesus Christ, which is located all over the world. I have no residence." He called his home on Cummings Road, which backs Dinosaur Adventure Land, a "church parish." I wish I were in Pensacola to go listen.....

I think I had subornation of something back in '68, but it wasn't penicillin resistant and cleared right up with a couple of shots. But maybe that wasn't the name of it.

Restart......
Today's news indicates that the Wheel of the Law is back to grinding slowly away...
Internal Revenue Service Special Agent Scott Schneider testified this morning that Jo Hovind requested financial help for her bills from Baptist Health Care, claiming that she had no income.
