What do you feel is the correct response to a specific threat identified which revolved around using drinks containers to hide explosive (specifically liquid explosives, it seems)?

Honestly?
I think that the right response is to do away with carry on luggage. Just stop the whole practice of carry on with a few limited exceptions.
No laptops, phones, ipods, pagers carried on.
Some prescription and OTC drugs should be allowed but provisions made for prior certification.
Some baby items should be allowed but again, with clear guidlines of what items and what procedures must be followed and a separate check in line set up to handle the exceptions.

good security measure, and it'd work for all the short flights. you know, those less than and hour and a half. unless you're on an overnight flight, that doesn't leave you much to do on the plane, and trust me, and eight hour flight is just a touch boring without some music (and if you want to listen to the on plane music, it's cost five bucks to get the headset, 'cause your's most likely won't work unless you've got a hairband, gum, or rubber band).
i guess the solution would be to rework the entire US flight infrastructure to support short hops to airports to get cross country.

Now I'm sorry but that just doesn't raise any sympathy in me at all. There really are other things you can do, like think, or talk with the people sitting around you or write or read a book or even play cards.
You may not believe this but it is actually possible to go for eight hours without hearing music, watching tv or talking on the phone.

i suggest we leave it to the generation gap. from what I understand (your belief statement) you're from the can-do generation, the one that won the second war to end all wars. or rather, the generation that grew up with the war, or something like that.
me, i'm just getting into college, having grown up with the stress of the fast-paced american life.
point is, you're easily twice my age.
good points though. I don't know if motion-sickness people can read on planes though .

If these items are in your checked baggage, you will probably never see them again. You'll never get business travelers to check their laptops and they are the only profitable customers that the airlines have.

I'm a business traveler who carries a laptop and I definately do not want to check it. In fact, I travel with carry-on's only, I don't want to check anything.

Our local airport (no international flights) banned all that stuff long before 9/11. I assumed they were following Transport Canada guidelines.
They had a display case outside the screening room containing examples of seized items - mostly tiny cans of Static-Guard. Must have been quite a blow to the travel-sized container industry.

Sure, but think how much easier it would be to join the Sex Mile Club!
We'd just have to take the bad with the good. Maybe the mortification factor would keep those 1.5-seat-occupying fellas off the plane, too.
It reminds me of that old joke: I just flew in from L.A., and, man, am I high!
I used to fly wearing an old Army field jacket for its multiple pockets and comfort. The last time I did that, it was winter, and I also wore a knit hat and my window-seat-glare protective shades. I guess the Unabomber effect kicked it, because I was scanned, interviewed, swabbed and much delayed, and felt fortunate to escape without an orifice check: they even asked me about a 25-year-old high level security clearance from my Army S-2 days.
Ever since, I've unfailingly been "randomly selected" for additional security checks no matter how much respectability I don.
Like Ma said, once you get a bad reputation...

Having grown up in the 1950s Midwest, where most people never traveled more than one state away by car, the sky and the ocean both continue to fill me with wonder.
I always try to fly by day and in a window seat. The sheer marvel of looking down on clouds never pales for me.
