Heheheh... but to be fair he could consider 16 as something other than a child. And there is also a difference between using a person in a publication for mass amusement, and two people engaged in amusing each other.

you oughta put that in the humor thread. that's really good, and a nice cheap shot at that.

At best, you have used a tu quoi fallacy against Foley.
I personally don't see anything legally wrong with what Foley did. I have a moral objection (that's right, folks) to such an act, but that's only my opinion. The only reason Foley is getting tarred and feathered is because he is someone well known. If someone else less well known did the same thing, it would have gone by without a single person noticing. As much as I don't like the morals and values crowd that seems to be taking over, I really don't see why I should sink to their level and be an opportunist/sensationalist at something like this. Hell, if what foley did warrants an arrest, then I guess my professor in college should be shot... And come on, am I to believe that a 16 year old is as innocent as the press makes him out to be? Edited by gasby, : further thought

I don't know who has this sig, but it goes like this: the modern conservative is engaged in mankind's oldest desire--the search for the moral justification of selfishness. That's me. Glad someone noticed it. Moose Professor, geology, Whatsamatta U Evolution - Changes in the environment, caused by the interactions of the components of the environment. "Do not meddle in the affairs of cats, for they are subtle and will piss on your computer." - Bruce Graham "The modern conservative is engaged in one of man's oldest exercises in moral philosophy; that is, the search for a superior moral justification for selfishness." - John Kenneth Galbraith "I know a little about a lot of things, and a lot about a few things, but I'm highly ignorant about everything." - Moose

Not that we have to get OT, but I don't understand what you mean. You put gags and say it was your first reaction, but I don't see anything in my post which could elicit that reaction. All I did was suggest why Foley could have made the statement he did in crash's quote, and not believe it related to him. Isn't that possible? And why is that suggestion revolting? holmes {in temp decloak from lurker mode} "What a fool believes he sees, no wise man has the power to reason away." (D.Bros)

I agree with much of what you say (along with berb). I haven't seen anything yet that is patently illegal. That said, he probably did commit a procedural error, that is he violated a workplace ethics rule. In 1983 two congressmen, a rep and dem, were censured at the same time for having sex with pages about the same age as Foley's page, one female and one male. Thus there certainly was precedent for knowing sex with pages was an internal issue. It might be noted that the gay dem congressman ignored the censure, did not resign, and went on to be re-elected 5 more times. Maybe Foley should have taken a lesson from the dem playbook. holmes {in temp decloak from lurker mode} "What a fool believes he sees, no wise man has the power to reason away." (D.Bros)

At best, you have used a tu quoi fallacy against Foley. I'm sorry, a what? A quick Google search turns up only one hit for "tu quoi fallacy" - you, using it in a gay marriage thread on this website. I have no idea what you mean by a "tu quoi fallacy." ("You what"?) Do you mean tu quoque ("you too")? "Tu quoque" is the fallacy of defending one's own faulty reasoning or improper behavior by pointing out your opponents doing the same thing. But I have never illegally propositioned a minor for sex. So how could I possibly be using tu quoque? I have nothing to defend.
The only reason Foley is getting tarred and feathered is because he is someone well known. No, the reason is because he was a powerful politician who drafted and passed legislation that clearly, he didn't believe he was obligated to obey. He believed he was above the laws he drafted for the rest of us. He did exactly what should be illegal, and is - using power, position, and age to coerece sexual activity from minors. I believe that's an immediate disqualification for leadership. Apparently you don't agree?
And come on, am I to believe that a 16 year old is as innocent as the press makes him out to be? Oh, sure. That hussy was asking for it, dressed as (s)he was.

Now, here's a very interesting question - why are both Fox News and the AP describing former Congressman Mark Foley as "D-FL"?

The fallacy also is committed when you accuse the other side of being a hypocrit, which has nothing to do with the issue itself.

Again, pointing out hypocrisy does nothing to strengthen your case. The question is has he done anything illegal?
I believe that's an immediate disqualification for leadership. Apparently you don't agree?
So, you admit to having a moral objection to his hypocrisy and because of this moral objection you think he should not be a leader?
Oh, sure. That hussy was asking for it, dressed as (s)he was.
I'm not saying that at all. He certainly didn't tie the kid down and butt rape him. At anytime if the kid felt uncomfortable he could have blocked any further im. This is at worse a 52 year old man embarrassing himself in front of a few 16 year olds.

I think it's been made clear to us that Foley did wait until the pages were no longer pages before he im them those horny messages. Again, while I don't like what he did, I absolutely don't find any reason why he and his party are being under attack from all fronts like this. The guy resigned, end of story.

Unfortunately I missed that part. Now it makes even less sense.

Like I said, I agree. This is wayyyyyyy out of proportion, even given precedent. holmes {in temp decloak from lurker mode} "What a fool believes he sees, no wise man has the power to reason away." (D.Bros)

School started again. Those kids left washington to go back to school. Unfortunately I missed that part. Now it makes even less sense. Added by edit. The reason I am so bothered by the liberals going all gung ho about this is because WE should be talking about THE REAL IMPORTANT ISSUES, like congress giving the president to suspend habeas corpus for non-citizens. Over and over we see someone's personal life being more important than an national/international issue? What are we, a nation of gossipers? Almost overnight, people everywhere completely forgot about the habeas corpus issue and started talking about an old man's personal life. This is like when Matthew Sheppard got tortured to death because he was gay. The liberal media gave the unfortunate young man 2 minutes of their broadcast time before going back to talk about Clinton's sex life. What worse, when christians (or so they claimed to be) protested at sheppard's funeral and wanted to erect a monument welcoming him to hell, the liberal media ignored it completely and continued to talk about Clinton's sex life. It's fun to joke about Foley, I admit, but now they want to spend my tax dollar to investigate an old man's fantasies. Sounds corny if you ask me. Edited by gasby, : No reason given.

The right wing, the self-appointed guardians of morality, have found immorality in their midst. The right wing attackers of homosexuality have found a homosexual within their number. I'm not sure why you would fail to find any reason. Or have you not noticed that the "attacks" are mostly coming from the right?
