Um, I'm going to have to ask you now for a reference to that article and that quote, because I think I also read that article and I don't recall anything like that.

quote: The thing is, I'm not judging you by MY moral standards, but by that of the Religious Right's. You lot are the ones telling me and my gay friends how we should live according to your own moral standards as put forth by your religious and political leaders, enforced by law if possible.
quote: Look, you can gush all you want in the public square about your past, but I'm not going to join in, thanks. Just because I choose to let my private life remain private has nothing to do with "refusing to come clean".

IF he carried on for three years in the way he is accused of then you have a point, but that has not been proved yet. Preaching against something for years that he is then enticed into himself afterward is a different situation. And we don't know yet what the actual story is.

I told James about a little man I had met in the hallway at New Life who, when I said I was from New York City, said, simply, “Ka-boom!” I told him also about Joseph Torrez, a New Lifer I had eaten dinner with, who, when describing the evangelical gathering underway in Colorado Springs, compared it to “Shaquille O'Neal driving down the lane, dunking on you.” Torrez had said, “It's time to choose sides,” a refrain I had heard over and over again during my time in Colorado Springs. “So which is it?” I asked. “Which side are you on? Theirs? Are you ready to declare war on me, on my city?” “No”” “Then choose.” “I”” “We can't,” Lisa interrupted, from the corner. “We can,” said John, another Bible Society editor. “We do. Just by being here.” Pastor Ted wore a black suit and a red tie. Earlier in the week, at a staff meeting, he had announced that he would use the wedding as an illustration, and to that end he delivered a lengthy prenuptial presentation with slides, in which he laid out a fractal-like repeating pattern of relations, shrinking and expanding: that of God to man, reflected in that of man to wife, which is in turn a model for a godly society. Just as we conform ourselves to God's will, so, said Ted, must “the Woman.” The Woman must take on her man's calling, her man's desire. “Mmm-hmmm,” murmured Linda, eyes closed. In return, Pastor Ted continued, the Woman gets the Man's love; authority just wants to serve. “Total surrender!” he called. “True or false?” “TRUE!” answered the 8,000 assembled. The Man is the Christ; the Woman is the Body. He is coming; she is the church; she must open her doors. United, they are the Kingdom, ready for battle. “The Christian home,” preached Pastor Ted, “is to be in a constant state of war.” This made many so happy they put their hands in the air, antennae for spirit transmissions. “Massive warfare!” Ted cried out. Creepy-ass, chilling shit. Edited by schrafinator, : No reason given.

You lot are the ones telling me and my gay friends how we should live according to your own moral standards as put forth by your religious and political leaders, enforced by law if possible. This is simply false. We are NOT telling anyone how to live. People are free to sin all they like in their private lives. We are working to prevent the Left from forcing US to accept behavior that violates our moral principles, to treat it as normal, to regard something that can't possibly be marriage as marriage, to write it into the law of the land, representing the nation as a whole. If it weren't for the Left trying to cram THEIR moral principles, such as they are, down OUR throats, there wouldn't be an issue here. Edited by Faith, : No reason given.

I don't get anything about an intention to blow anything up from that. That "ka-boom" needs more context at least. And I find the reporter's attitude rather palpably sarcastic, not exactly objective or neutral. I suspect I would have plenty of my own objections to Pastor Ted's preaching, but they wouldn't be hers or yours.

quote: So, gay people CAN get married? Private companies CAN use embryonic stem cells for research to cure diseases? RU-486 is easily available in all pharmacies? You people aren't trying to prevent those freedoms for all Americans?
quote: You don't have to. Your churches don't have to recognize them, nor do you have to recognize them in your private life, just as I don't have to recognize your marriage or those performed in your church. And, it's just your personal opinion and assertion that gay marriage "can't possibly be marriage". I know several gay couples who are, in fact, married. It's just that those marriages are not recognized by the state. Just because a social institution has not changed in the past doesn't mean it cannot change now or in the future.
quote: Nobody is forcing you to recognize as married the gay couple that moves in next door to you. Nobody is forcing your church to recognize gay marriage, nor perform gay marriages. Nobody is forcing you to like it. You, however, should be forced to allow other consenting adults to live in marriages to people of their choosing, and not be required to restrict their choice of people to the gender that you people decide is acceptable for them. You don't get to decide that for other consenting adults. That's THEIR decision which has nothing at all to do with you.

quote: "Ka-boom" sounds like what to you? Come on. What other possible sound could it be referring to other than an explosion, especially in the context of Pastor Ted's constant preaching of "spiritual warfare" and how the large American cities were rife with evil teachings, lifestyles and demonic influence? What, all of that language about "choosing sides" and "war" and "spiritual enemies" found in the cities doesn't convince you? But anyway, I never said that they had an actual intention to blow anything up. The vague threats are creepy, though.

I laugh out loud at almost nothing, but seeing this on the news yesterday put me in the throes of belly laughter. Not being from America, my only experience of Haggard was from that Dawkins show (called 'Root of All Evil', or as I like to call it, 'That Dawkins Show'). Although I knew it was an irrational thought, I thought that I could tell he was a creep just from looking at him and hearing him talk; so it's good to see that my almost unjustified hatred of Ted Haggard now has a foundation (a foundation beyond that of being a generally creepy, money-grabbing evangelist).

to regard something that can't possibly be marriage as marriage, to write it into the law of the land, representing the nation as a whole. Like when the Supreme Court struck down the miscegenation laws of sixteen states just 39 years ago? There were sermons about that one....with Scripture quotes, too.
