If your father died in the war, he only would have died for his loved ones, not the people who sent him, the societies, the systems, the money and the power.
My Grandfather's best friend died in the war. For what? For freedom? What a lie. He died possibly absurdly trying to do the best he could in a place of evil and death. Was his life simply to re-affirm the belief that "freedom isn't free"? Haha. He died not for that ridiculous and mindless phrase. Shit... He died as a product. What gives any meaning to his absurd and horrible death? Was he knowingly protecting his friends? Was he part of a squad of imbeciles? Or did he love his squad? How absurd this all is. He could have been in a squad full of idiots. Non-thinkers. They were PRODUCTS. THEY WERE ALL PRODUCTS. THEY WERE USED. THEY WERE EXPLOITED. THEY WERE FORGOTTEN. WHO WOULD SAVE THEM? Was there anything which made their lives worth it? Of course he was my Grandfather's best friend... But why, why did he die? I thought I understood it, I thought that the movie gave me new knowledge into soldiers, and deaths for nothing of any worth at all. For borders and complete shit. But the movie has not resolved these problems, and I find myself who had claimed to have transcended all unoriginal thought pertaining to war and death, but I have become part of it again, back to where I was. But for the soldiers, for Ira Hayes, they died for each other, they flipped it all around on their masters, they grinned when they were put to rest, they laughed at those fools who used them. And God laughed with them. God laughed with them. I had never realized that this above statement that I made is bullshit. It makes no sense. Many soldiers would never want to die for their "eachother", for their crew mates. Many were above their crew. Many thought of amazing ideas while their crew was a bunch of savages. Idiots were apart of this crew. There was no reason for dying, they died in vain. The soldiers who thought, who understood things would die in vain. They would not even feel at all connected to their fellow soldiers, they would probably hate them. And we can pump up their deaths so grossly, with slogans and more wars. With politics and movies. war is a bad thing and i wish that we had world peace, but i live in the real world and know that that is just not going to happen. my dad has been in many wars and u had better not be talkin crap about him. because unless uve been to war and served the ur country u dont have the right to talk about them. they go to war to defend their family,friends,country,values, and every thing they believe in. if u cant respect the sacrifices they made i say u get the hell up out of the USA. Even though it makes me an elitist jerk... why am I not surprised you are from kentucky?

At some point during the process of adapting James Bradley's nonfiction book about the battle of Iwo Jima, Clint Eastwood decided he'd need two movies to adequately manage the material's scope. The first, Flags of Our Fathers, focuses solely on the American campaign. It uses Joe Rosenthal's celebrated photograph of the raising of the flag as a springboard for a successful war bonds fund-raiser, and debates with timely flair the use of political spin to salvage an unpopular war. Eastwood's follow-up, Letters from Iwo Jima, arrives in theaters early next year and will recount the battle from Japan's perspective. The director hired first-time screenwriter Iris Yamashita to develop Letters from an idea that screenwriter Paul Haggis proposed. He will employ an all-Asian cast, and will not use any of the actors we meet in Flags. It is yet to be determined whether the two movies will offer legitimate parallels, or exist as separate entities. War sems to be the American way. If we had no war, we would have no materialistic empire, don't you think? I understand and think it quite Christ-like to be a nation of pacifists, but I also wonder what the implication of such behavior would be? The Western Powers have had to raise up more than once against threats from other regimes and other blocs of power. As you said, it is human nature. In this day and age, with the prospects of nuclear war still very much present, war seems like a foolish option. In the context of Iwo Jima, however, I would never belittle the efforts of our Fathers in their wars. My Dad was in the Pacific back then, and he did the job that he had to do, or so he told me. Im sure that our peers in Iraq feel much the same way. Just out of curiousity, if you somehow were forced to go to Iraq, how would you react? Would you flee to Canada or would you obey the law. (assuming a draft)

Keep telling your story, City Boy. Whether you are regarded as right or wrong by the readers, you deserve respect and dignity. Some of these pricks think if they do not agree with you that somehow you are stupid or a kid or a ignorant red neck. These people piss me off.
It's OK to express yourself and make sensible, intelligent comments and this forum usually contains really smart and interesting people. Because I am not nearly as cool and smart as some of these legendary guys, usually I just shut up and follow the discussions. But I could not listen to this crap. True character would prevent one from saying these hurtful, hateful things. However, those who are without that character cannot filter out the unnecessary because they incorrectly "perceive" they are not governed by those restrictions. Some of these guys often think they are really special. While I will assure you they certainly are not.
