If you've noticed anything about fundamentalists it's that they often assume that if they like an idea then it's true. Since they mostly won't like 1) and will like 2) it's pretty obvious which way the majority would go,

Heh. Me too. As it turns out, I don't think Driscoll was even thinking of Haggard when he wrote his blog entry. Maybe he's thinking of his own wife? (Not that I mean to dis Mrs. Driscoll; just suggesting that she might want to think hard about with whom she really wants to spend the rest of her life.)

Kings were put to death long before 21 January 1793. But regicides of earlier times and their followers were interested in attacking the person, not the principle, of the king. They wanted another king, and that was all. It never occurred to them that the throne could remain empty forever. -- Albert Camus

I can't believe I didn't think of that.

In my opinion, he is not apologizing at all. He is doing damage control.
Bingo. So far he has not acknowledged any behavior that hasn't been proven--and he did not acknowledge that until it was proven, the hallmark of damage control. I'll take bets that another Haggard intimate shows up soon.
Takers?
I noted Driscoll's blame-the-woman blog in the first Haggard thread. It is a recurrent pattern among evangelicals--indeed, in the Christian tradition. It's so handy to blame straight male misbehavior on Mom, sis, and wifey (i.e., Eve): she made me this way, she asked for it, what did she think I would do, ad nauseam. We would greatly benefit from a regime of matriarchal corrective.
The need to find an external, blameworthy cause is paramount, else one might suspect other rabidly anti-gay evangelicals are also closeted and projecting (Driscoll, anyone?). I have always enjoyed listening to my gay friends play "Queer or Not A Queer" (very similar to "Jew or Not A Jew" on vintage Saturday Night Live).
As Jim the Two-Spirited Cherokee once said to me about another TV evangelical: "Just look at his hair! That man is queer as a N'Orleans queen!" By the way, has it occurred to anyone besides me that the typical portrait of white-bread Jesus is awfully...pretty?
I thought Mrs. Haggard was pretty cute. Maybe she'll consider a metrosexual the second time around...maybe she'll find a nice girl.

Utterly off-topic

No you aren't the only one, I suggest you read up on medieval nuns in the 13th - 15th century and you'll see just how "pretty" he was considered in some convents.

It could have been worse.
Imagine if the fundies had gotten their way with a conservative republican congress to get "faith-based-giving" support for their churches, and then it turned out that the money Jimmy Bakker, Jimmy Swaggart, and Kenny Haggard used to pay their prostitutes (of various persuasions and various proclivities) came directly from tax funds.
The next step would then be for congress to set up a department to tightly control and oversee the use of those tax funds. A very big step toward a state sanctioned and controlled religion. This is probably why most sane religious organizations are strongly opposed to tax funds being used for religious purposes of any sort. The man with the gold controls the fold!

Is Haggard apologizing for his infidelity or for his gayness?
imh(ysa)o I think he is apologising for getting caught. I know a conservative that said that was the only thing Nixon did wrong ...

The Latest
Haggard's infidelity, not with whom, ended prominent pastor's tenure, official says

By Eric Gorski
The Rev. Ted Haggard lost his pulpit because he admitted to "sexual immorality" outside of his marriage, and the gender of the other person involved had no bearing on the decision-making process, a member of the panel that fired him said Monday.
"Not one time in 3 1/2 days (the panel met) was it ever addressed or discussed that this situation was with a man," said the Rev. Michael Ware, senior pastor of Victory Church in Westminster.
"That never entered the conversation," Ware said. "Let's diffuse that right now. I think people are trying to make this a debate about evangelicals and homosexuality, and this was not a debate in this situation at all."
Ware's comments shed more light on Haggard's stunning fall as one of the nation's most prominent evangelical leaders. Other observers parsing Haggard's two-page apology and confession that was read Sunday at New Life Church in Colorado Springs say they can't tell what "darkness" he is struggling with - marital infidelity or same-sex attraction.

In other breaking news, Rev. Ware has announced that their church has several parcels of tropical beachfront property for sale in Moffat County, Colorado. All have ready access, with drives under 30 minutes each way, to shopping and world-class universities.

Re: The Latest
Well, it is possible that the sex of the other party was not openly discussed during the meeting. I have a harder time believing, though, that the information did not have an affect on how the participants were thinking.

No doubt with good drainage, too--and don't forget the unobstructed waterfront view.

Maybe if his wife were a man who provided him with crystal meth, this poor guy wouldn't have had to go searching for other ways to satisfy his urges.
