Hi everybody!
I must admit that I have been a nameless "Lurker" here for several months now. I have become a true fan of EvC forum, and finally decided I owe it to you all just to at least drop by and say hi. First of all I want to thank you all for your wit, honesty and willingness to debate some tough issues. And especially to the Admin team and directors for keeping the threads (almost) always on topic. You guys have a great site!
To tell you a little about me, I was born and raised in a fundamental Christian family; in fact my father was, and still is a minister. The majority of my education was received from christian institutions (through college), and as a consequence I grew up believing evolution to be contrary to all that is pure, good, and logical, and that the ICR was the cutting edge of modern research.
Unfortunately, it was not until after I graduated that I began to find myself genuinely interested in science. Ironically as it turned out, I wanted to investigate the timeline of Noah's flood and compare it against the known timelines that we have of ancient civilizations. I wanted to be able to point to a definite time in history and say "Look--here is when the flood happened, and this is the break in the historical chronologies."
The answer to that was big surprise number one for me, and the beginning of more than a few questions. I decided to read biology in a more objective way, and was surprised to discover that this horrible, Darwinian nonsense was actually a very reasonable interpretation of the evidence at hand.
The last ten years have been an interesting journey of learning for me, and EvC is my new "Favorite thing to read" online. I look forward to continuing to read, and perhaps participate in this awesome forum.
Cheers!

Hi nwr...fair dinkum mate? Another aussie? The truth be told there's not much of Oz left of me except the blood and a recently expired passport. But I was born in Brisbane and came to the US at age ten. I now sport a "Yank" accent that fools the best of them.
Nice to meet ya'!

Re: Welcome Aussie!
Hi Aussie. I'm a creationist Jesus knowing God loving Biblical fundie who's been one of those for 60+ years since age 10. Though I've been here for over 3 years fulfilled prophecies and a whole lot more good stuff keeps me on the (abe:Biblical fundamentalist road). I'm also one of the moderators for EvC.
Hello Buzsaw! A pleasure to talk to you, but no introductions are necessary! I know excactly who you are! Although I no longer share your beliefs, I have read many of your postings. It is people like you and Faith that help in keeping the debates interesting. I rejected the YEC position about ten years ago, but I understand the position from which you debate and some of the emotions you feel as you defend your faith. You have my respect.
Cheers!

"How much flak did you get? I got a lot, some of it very vitriolic (I hope I know what that word means), and I still get some occasionally, even from dear friends. I live in a Christian community that "officially" holds to a belief in evolution, though we still have a few holdouts who love to send comments my way, hoping that we'll end up being wrong. (They're friends, that sort of flak isn't bad.)"
It's about the same for me, TL. I get some flack from a few Christian friends, but the truth is that many of them are not prepared to discuss it with any depth at all. A few blurbs from ICR and case closed. Then it's back to "All by Faith". It was a pity because I spent a few years just wanting a Christian to discuss these questions with, without them feeling like I was
"Losing my faith". That's why it's refreshing to hear of churches like your's that are not afraid to let the evidence speak for itself. But I am an expert in none of it! I'm here to maybe ask some questions and to learn. But it's all fun...
I am very curious about your Christian community experience. From Sanford to TN? Are you comfortable telling me a little about it?

"Don't blame us. When creationist and IDist debate is disallowed and restricted in the sience field in educational institutions and places like this, what do you expect? You won't find it in these places since it's not considered science. We do try it on occasion and it often goes the full 10 pages but upsets the fruit basket so to speak with all kinds of heck to pay."
I certainly do not blame you personally Buzsaw. You're in there locking horns with the best of them.
But I find myself troubled at the lack of understanding of fundamentalists in general concerning science. Many are unable or unwilling to even define the meaning of the word "Science", and abide by that definition. There is a general feeling that science is "Attacking" religion and faith, but as I see it science knows and sets its own limitations. Science as a general rule only deals with things that are quantifiable. It can define the amount of attraction two objects exert on each other; it can describe the trajectory of a missile necessary to reach a given target, it can explain why at a given indicated airspeed a wing begins to produce lift. In its areas of expertise "Science" is very smart. But science cannot tell you how much Jesus loves you. And it will never know how wonderful Heaven is, or how many angels are watching over you every day.
To me the most amazing thing about modern science is that it knows its own limitations. It does not reject God, it simply cannot measure Him; there is no quantifying His goodness or mercy, and is blind to His Grace. Science is all about asking questions, but fundamentalists dare question nothing concerning the faith. I know this Buz, I have been there. They tend to be so wrapped up in their own world view that they become defensive and prickly when someone from the outside begins to introduce questions, because well-directed questions that are left without adequate answers beget small doubts. And small, unresolved doubts are ultimately devastating.
At least here your debate is not hindered at all; your Admin. status proves that! And heck is a small price to pay for the truth.

G'Day Tony! Nope, I'm afraid I haven't been back to Oz for many years. Doesn't mean I can't be proud of my heritage, or literally half of my family that resides there. What a great place to be a kid! I really want to revisit and show her off to my wife, who happens to be from Spain.

Hi again, Tony,
Mind if I ask where in Australia you're from? I was only ever in Queensland, mostly Maryborough, where my grandparents still reside. My memories of Australia are those of a child...going to school, playing with friends, singing "God save the queen" before class, but what an awesome country!
About Spanish women...I'm SO proud of mine in so many ways...

Faith is not blind. If after observation if the chair is solid you sit in it having faith that it holds you up. By the same token we observe evidences of ID and either accept or reject relative to how extensively we observe and how we interpret those observations. Perhaps you were light on ID observation and heavy on Evo observation in your personal experience.
Hey Buzsaw,
Sorry, but it is physics, not faith that holds your proverbial chair up. And in my education and experience, I spent more energy and time defending YEC than I now care to admit. I spent countless hours memorizing ICR's arguments, and even Ron Wyatt's garbage (Sorry, but it really WAS) than many others I know.
I am in no way trying to position myself to question your faith-I have only respect for that-but I find no credibility in the Young Earth Creationist's scientific methodology. They present no positive evidence, only philosophical rhetoric...and that in NO WAY constitutes science.

Hey Tony!
I have an Uncle that used to live in Townesville! My sister ADORES northern Queensland. Next time I visit it WILL include Townesville. I heard they changed the National Anthem, but I never learned the new one. Great knowing you! (And yes my chest still swells with pride on hearing "Waltzing Matilda"). I'm with you in that one!

I live in our governor-elects home town.
St. Pete, eh? Nice little corner of Florida. I spent a few days on Ana Marie Island in September.
I will avoid making any gender-specific references toward you to try to avoid another introductory flop like I did with the much-annoyed brennakimi, who is female.

I'd love to tell you about it, but I can't derail this thread going into it. Feel free to read all you want at Error 404 (Not Found)!!1.
I'm not even sure exactly which "rail" we're on anyway...but Rose Creek seems like a nice place with friendly folks.
