The truer face of Jesus?
Further down thread at your Panda's Thumb link was this link:
http://archives.cnn.com/2002/TECH/science/12/25/face.jesus/
above cited writes:
The Jesus pictured on the cover of this month's Popular Mechanics has a broad peasant's face, dark olive skin, short curly hair and a prominent nose. He would have stood 5-foot-1-inch tall and weighed 110 pounds, if the magazine is to be believed.
See cite for more.

They probably couldn't sell them, so were looking for a tax deduction on the gift.
No, I think it's worse than that. They were donated with every expectation that the Marines woukld reject them, specifically for the purpose of giving Christians another excuse to whine about how oppressed they are.
In other words, actual poor children are little more than pawns to these people; not people with a need their commandments direct them to ameliorate, but simply an opportunity to get Christianist talking points on the evening news.

couldn't they just send it to the salvation army? As far as I know, they are still a private, and christian, organization.
