Re: PWL
I`d like to see a post word limit. We all are here for a limited time (I assume), and long posts tend to consume too much time and intellectual effort.
I'll be the first to admit that I am a lazy reader when it comes to posts at times. I also have a short attention span. (I'm sorry, did you say something?) Even after I write a long post, I sometimes don't like to proof read it because I'd rather just be done with it. This would explain why I tend to have a lot of typos.
At the same time, its annoying trying to debate boring posters who seemingly think that one paragraph is going to get their point across well. Or as if their one sentence answer was supposed to be so profound that I completely convert to their rationale and no longer want to debate. The reality is, if its so short that I have nothing to go by, I simply lose interest.
To summarize, I don't think we should limit posts, as it would limit our freedom of expression. As Chiro put it, don't bother to read it. He enjoys being intellectually stimulated, so leave the long post to him and others like him.

"With derision the atheist points out that there can be no God because this world is so unfair. Without hesitation, I concur with him. Indeed, we live in an unfair world because of all sorts of social ills and perils. I must not contend with such a sentiment because it is factual-- we don't live in a fair world. Grace is unambiguous proof that we live in an unfair world. I received salvation when I deserved condemnation. Yes, indeed this world is unfair." -Andrew Jaramillo-

Re: PWL
I think a better idea would be to limit the amount of quoted words you can use. It only gets hard to read when large chunks of quotes are interspersed with short replies. Hopefully, rather than back and forths with each post having ten different topics, the person might consider making their overall point and/or refute the important parts of the post they are responding to.

WOW! I forgot how advanced the tech is getting! A lot of it is beyond my scope of awareness. I was past my mid 60s before I got my first computer so still have a lot to learn as I'm pretty much learning on my own. My boys help me some though, but not living near my location.

Any other suggestions about how we can revive this place?

I have 3 suggestions to bring this place back to life.
Number One: Scrap the Showcase Forum and let the loonies out of there and into the general populace.
Number Two: A three warnings and you are out policy. Apply it fairly to all members. Three warnings and then permanent ban.
Number Three: Scrap the Proposed New Topics Forum. Sometimes takes too long to clear a topic and when asked to tidy up the OP many people just don't bother and leave. If the OP is a bit ambiguous then general members can ask the proposer for clarification.
Won't your suggestion #2 rapidly eliminate any possible benefit that might be felt from suggestion #1?

Re: PWL
And if I don't have the time to read a long post, then I probably don't have the time to be on the internet to begin with.
Hmm. I can't say I agree with that. In fact, I can't think of why this ought to be true unless reading long posts was the only reason to be on the internet.
Don't read long posts. Your problem is solved!
This is true, but I have to say I'm prone to agreeing with nighttrain that a word limit would help a lot of the discussions. Forcing answers to be more concise would in most cases make them more readable and direct. This would improve most people's enjoyment of the threads, and that is what Brian asked about in the OP.
There are places where shortening the posts would cause a problem, but I think so many more posts would benefit from being more to the point that it might be worth it to limit the length.

Javascript 1.0, originally called LiveScript, was introduced by Netscape and Sun in 1995. It was later adopted by Microsoft in Internet Explorer version 3. The EvC Forum software relies a great deal upon Javascript code. For example, the display of date/time in the member's local time zone is done by Javascript.
Even those of us working in the hi-tech industry only take for granted that which we personally work on. So when I walk into a Best Buy or a Circuit City or a CompUSA I am as amazed and bewildered by the rapid advances in technology as anyone else.
In other words, I'm familiar with Javascript because I work with it on a daily basis when I'm coding for the site. But I completely understand when someone else hears about it for the first time and is completely amazed by its capabilities. It is indeed amazing! Visit the scoreboard pages at the ESPN site while games are still going on and you'll notice that the scores and stats are updated without refreshing the entire page - it's done entirely through Javascript. Tonight around 8:30 PM ET for NBA games would be a good time to see this.

Buz, could be worse. My parents just got a computer. I've been helping them with the computer. Explains why I'm losing my hair... been pulling them out while trying to show them how to download music and convert cd's into mp3 to put in their ipod.

Thanks! Flying wore off around Tuesday. Now I'm going through occasional spasms of simultaneous panic and joy, where I realize I have to plan a wedding, and oh yeah, I'm getting married.
