Re: BREAKING NEWS! Dawkins Wishes Merry Christmas To All! : Errata
This publication regrets that it misquoted Mr. Dawkins when it reported that he wished everyone a "Merry Christmas."
In fact, he wished everyone a "Happy Christmas", being British and all.

Yuletide Greetings
Yuletide greetings to one and all from a tricky Brit who had not heard the term "Happy Holidays" until now.
I thought what we call holidays you call vacations so now I am really confused.
Anyway - Transatlantic confusion apart - May your Christmas be happy, merry or even both as you see fit.
We get the same stories about the war on Christmas over here too and they usually turn out to be either blown out of all proportion or just untrue as well.
Frankly Christmas has little to dowith Christianity these days anyway so there isn't much to go to war over even if anyone wanted to.

And isn't the main defining event of Christianity celebrated at Easter, anyways?

And there was me thinking Easter was about Bunny Rabbits and eating huge quantities of chocolate eggs

And sex. It's the holiday of Eostre (possibly a derivation of Ishtar), a fertility goddess.

Christmas Traditions
Most of the Christmas traditions - Christmas trees, candles, gift giving, carols, December 25th, 12 days of christmas etc. etc. all have Pagan origins.
The whole Santa Claus, chimney diving, reindeer riding stocking filler tradition also has nothing to do with Christianity.
In fact you could easily omit all the Christian based elements and most people would barely notice the difference.
So I am not sure what there is to have a war, real or imagined, over??

More Wal-Mart Christmas Myths
I hate wal-mart. I avoid it at all costs. But every time I have ever been there I never seen a wal-mart greeter. Just yesterday I was dragged to wal-mart by my lovely wife and.....no greeter! I have heard about them in the news and even seen some video clips, but I have yet to actually see one of these beasts in the wild.

Re: More Wal-Mart Christmas Myths
I've seen Walmart greeters, and frankly, they are some of the most unoffensive people I've seen. It's like, maybe you're against giving money to charity, but does that mean you're against the guy freezing his ass off trying to get you to give money to charity? You just kind of feel bad for him. He can say whatever sort of yuletide greeting he wants to me, its all kosher.

What to do with Christmas warmongers
I am usually a very peaceful person. But it is times like this that I feel people like Bill O'Riley need to be ejected into space.
Wars are going on in the world. People are dying tragically in Darfur and Baghdad. Many thousands if not millions of people are going to die of cold an hunger this holiday season. Our rights are being ever so slowly eroded by professional politicians. Even reasonably well off people are STILL slowly being killed by the lack of adequate healthcare. The rich are still getting richer and the poor are still getting poorer.
All this and our news is filled with all this trash about some assholes feeling being hurt about what phrases should be used to signify a season. TO SPACE THE LOT OF THEM!

Of course, biblical creationists are committed to belief in God's written Word, the Bible, which forbids bearing false witness; --AIG (lest they forget)

Re: Yuletide Greetings
we call an extended break from work a vacation.
a much more longer break (generally involuntary, sometimes voluntary), is unemployment.
if there's a celebration (Easter, Memorial Day, July 4, Labor Day, Halloween, Veteran's Day, and Christmas(these seem to be the big ones)), its a holiday.

I'm so glad I live in a country where people cheerfully say 'Merry Christmas' to friends who smile appreciatively and return the greeting--even though nearly everyone involved is Buddhist or agnostic.
God bless Taiwan.
And Merry Christmas to all!
