Your basically saying.... 'the Devil made them do it!'
Dude, that is so not what I'm saying. The devil has nothing to do with two people being too scared to to have an abortion or even (for christ sake) have the baby adopted!
If nobody had said "Abortion is sufficiently wrong that you should entertain risking your bloody life!" there would be no social pressure to conform to a set of (outdated) religious strictures.
That is my only contention here.
Devil and god be damned as a good reason to risk your life.
scottness writes:
Did the option of sacrificing the career even occur to you? It's a choice made by many on a daily basis.
Did the lack of an option of doing anything other than a hair brain home abortion not reflect the profound anxiety generated by their going against the social norms of the church? If the church kept away from the pair of them the home abortion would not have been entertained as an option.
The driver for behviour is always thoughts and beliefs. Get the wrong beliefs and you do stupid thisngs.

Re: Absolutes?
He believes that absolute truth which he has found applies to everyone whether they know it or not.
I can only ask "What Absolute Truth?"
So far no one has presented one that has any meaning on examination.

Re: Morality and Yahweh
You mean from Old Testament stories?
Mostly from the OT.
But we have some examples of Jesus' immorality in the NT, such as His viiolent outburst at the Temple.
There's also the incident where Jesus murdered the son of Annas, and then murdered a little boy who had bumped Jesus' shoulder.

Re: Botched home op.
You should be abel to figure this stuff out Gasby.
He was still trying, after all of that, to protect the image of the beast. Our desperation to find a way to avoid the consequences leads to the most irrational of behavior.
Our pride is systemic, and we don't like to face how stupid we have really been. It's always easier to confess to those who understand even in the gravest of scenario's.
Most people would be ready to bring down the hammer and judge!

I can not tell in what context you are reading these words. In the context of what I am saying, they refer to what you elsewhere have called 'Question'.
Since I have gone this far, I may as well finish my analogy.
I have a version of absolute truth. It differs from yours, it differs form scottness; so from my point of view everyone else is part of the problem of moral decline, and vice vesa.
Since we can't all agree, we have to pick the greatest common denominator. It seems like the greatest common denominator is 'love thy neighbor' and grant all neighbors the same rights and freedoms. Since loving thy nieghbor is a good thing, it is hard to say that morality is in decline. Very very hard.

I'm not judging. I just see a person so indoctrinated by religion that confessing his sin to avoid eternal damnation is more important than trying to save the life of his loved one.

Re: The semi-hidden moral reality...
It is all relative
Now that is an informative statement!
If your statement includes itself, then it is false. If it excludes itself then it is false.

I don't think he called the pastor to confess his sin Gasby. The sin was obvious! He needed someone to hold him up in light of what he was now going to face. The excrement had already hit the rotator.

Re: The semi-hidden moral reality...
Quotemining is seldom productive.
If and when you can show some Absolute Truth or morality, perhaps there might be some point in discussing it.

No idea. I can say that no one has been able yet to show any such critter so the evidence so far is that there is no absolute truth.
You want to play word games or give us an example of Absolute Truth?

1=1=2... I just quotemined an uncountable number of textbooks.

Absolute truth is not something you prove exists jar, it is something you cannot deny!
Go ahead and try to give me a logical statement that posits an absolute while denying that absolutes exist.
That's why NJ's signature says what it says.
You have to use absolutes, in order to deny them. So if you deny them, you might as well say that you don't exist.
In fact, you can't prove to me that you do... You might be a silicon chip in a petri dish and all of this is just your imagination. It's just that to deny you do not exist would be absurd in the highest degree.
