Pat Robertson at the beginning of last year predicted, based on a conversation with god, that there will be numerous storm strikes on the East Coast and a possible tsunami on the West Coast.
MSN | Outlook, Office, Skype, Bing, Breaking News, and Latest Videos
Now, today I find this article with a fresh prophecy for 2007
Error
From the article....
Pat Robertson writes:
I have a relatively good track record," he said. "Sometimes I miss."
and....
Pat Robertson writes:
Even though the U.S. was not hit with a tsunami, Robertson on Tuesday cited last spring's heavy rains and flooding in New England as partly fulfilling the prediction.
Several questions....
  • To be considered a prophet or a false prophet what does one's batting average have to be?
  • Is there partial credit for a prophecy? Does partial fulfillment count?
  • Just how specific does a prophecy have to be. For example, can a prophet claim that god told him that there will be an earthquake in 2007 and some weather records will be broken.
Edited by iceage, : No reason given.

To be fair, I will offer the following defense for Pat Robertson.
Many science fiction movies, series, and books have tackled the possibility of premonition before. Most of these have pointed out a major problem with telling the difference between probable future events and definite future events.
Major Samatha Carter of Stargate SG-1 explained that while Classical Newtonian Mechanics allowed for an accurate glimpse of the future given that the seer is given all the initial conditions of every particle in the universe, Quantum Mechanics shot that out of the water. You could never know both the velocity and the position of the quantum particles, which reduces you down to only being able to tell the probabilities of certain future events taking place.
In the series Babylon 5, one of the prophets of Centauri Prime explained to Captain Sheridan that the future changes all the time and that the true prophets have to be able to develop the ability to sense which is the probable future and which is the definite future. In one of her prophecies of the definite future, her nephew Lord _____ (can't remember his name) would be killed by shadows. He ends up being killed by an ancient race called the Shadows. She also told Sheridan that he was going to face two choices, one of which would bring the destruction of the Babylon station. Fortunately, he chose the right one preventing the loss of the station.
In the scifi series 7 Days, the hero of the series went back in time to prevent a major catastrophe. The first thing he did was bet all his money on a team he knew would win. Unfortunately for him, his very presence in the past moved the air molecules in such a way that changed the events in the football game. He ended up losing all his money.
In X-men comic books (yes, I am a science fiction nerd), one of my favorite characters that ever was created was Destiny. Destiny had the gift of foresight, being able to see future events. Unfortunately, she often had trouble telling the difference between the probable future and the definite future. While she was in an intimate relationship with Mystique, Destiny was able to foresee the definite future of her own death. Destiny instructed Mystique to creamate her after her death and at such and such time and date Mystique was to throw her ashes into the river. Mystique followed Destiny's instruction and at the exact time and place a gust of wind blew Destiny's ashes back into Mystique's face, which made Mystique smile at the last joke played on her by her now dead former lover.
The point is the weather is a chaotic system. The world as a whole is composed of many chaotic systems. IFF there is such thing as premonition, we should expect these people with these premontions to foresee both probable and definite future events. Personally, I would expect that without proper training these people would have the same problem of telling the difference between probable and definite future events just as the science fiction characters that I have mentioned.
PS - I never forgave the comic book writers for killing off Destiny. She was probably the most gentle and sweet characters in the x-men series. Personally, the writers killed her off because of political reasons. The only gay character to have ever made it into such a major scifi comic series.

    Hit or miss
    Pat Robertson writes:
I have a relatively good track record," he said. "Sometimes I miss."
That`s considerably better than the Watchtower Society`s 100% strike-out rate, IA. And they never prophesized the 25,000 sexual abuse claims,either.:-p

    Hit or miss? Easy hit
    He made three claims
    • a terrorist attack on the United States
    • mass killing late in 2007.
    • that major cities and possibly millions of people will be affected by the attack
This is supposed to be phophetic? At the end of the year he can say that virtually anything that killed a handfull or so people may have been caused by terrorism. Bird flu, plane crash, traffic jam, a car backfiring near an old folks home.
Mass killings mean what? What is mass killings anyhow? He could have said hundreds of deaths, instead he chooses the word "mass". Is a whole family considered mass killing? 4, 5 people dead.
Millions affected has almost no meaning at all. How many people died as the result of the "Anthrax Terrorism"? Thanks to the news networks I imagine a billion or so people where affected.
Does this guy get paid for this? If his paychecks are anything similar to Kent Hovind, I think I have discovered my new line of work!

Pat Robertson is just a liar and a conman
Pat Robertson is nothing more than a liar, a VERY, VERY RICH and SUCCESSFUL liar and conman.
Pat Robertson has gotten rich by relying on the gullibility and ignorance of the average American Christian.
If Pat Robertson was simply as ignorant as his audience, it might be possible that he really was dumb enough to think that rain and floods equal a tsunami, but all indications are that he is not that ignorant. The only other possible explanation is that is is just a LIAR.
    To your question:
To be considered a prophet or a false prophet what does one's batting average have to be?
I would think that ones batting average should be higher than zero at the least.
Is there partial credit for a prophecy? Does partial fulfillment count?
Is a bridge that gets only part way across the ravine a partial success?
Just how specific does a prophecy have to be.
Specific enough to do something about it before the event.
For example, can a prophet claim that god told him that there will be an earthquake in 2007 and some weather records will be broken.
They can and do and get paid handsomely for it. It is their stock in trade.
"This way to the egress folk."

    Which prophecy?
According to this site, Robertson has been saying the world will end April 29th 2007 since 1990.
So, if the world ends in spring 2007, how will there be a "mass killing" in the US at the end of 2007?
    Also
NEW: Robertson claims God spoke to him
    How is this new?

Perhaps he meant the world as we know it ends in Spring of 2007, not the literal world itself.

Yes, he already claimed that some broken rain fall records partly fulfilled his failed last year's prophecy.
So does god just partially fulfill prophecies?
Question for the biblical literalist, does this instruction still apply...
    Deuteronomy 18:20 writes:
But a prophet who presumes to speak in my name anything I have not commanded him to say, or a prophet who speaks in the name of other gods, must be put to death

I think he means that the roof will collapse in a Roman Catholic church during Sunday Mass.(*snicker*)
He's not much of a fan of Catholics, you know.

Remember that the previous year the weather people were predicting massive hurricane seasons and all of that. Pat was only basing this weather prediction to make his prophecy. In other words, god went out of its way to make sure the weather didn't behave like Pat said it would.
I think this is proof enough that god herself doesn't want Pat to succeed.

Interest view. God is actively making Robertson look bad. I think it is time to drag him to the gates of town and stone him - just like the good book commands.

Pat Robertson is likely Stoned most of the time.
I must agree with iceage here and go with getting Pat Robertson stoned.
Oh, I have a feeling Pat Robertson stays that way most of the time. The question is "Are all the viewers and supporters of Pat Robertson and the 700 Club perpetually stoned as well? Or do they send all that money to him just for the comedic value?"
You know we do pay other comedians outrageous sums just because they make us laugh. Why should comics like Pat Robertson be any different?
