Author | Topic: Where is the Good Non American Music??? | |||||||||||||||||||||||

I can't think of any good non-american bands.
All they have to show for is Led Zeppelin and the Beatles, and they suck. Oh my, the good 'ol US could stop all its middle-east shenanigans, and the world would still hate it for the likes of poster boys like this Far be it from me to prove things otherwise to you - against such mind-boggling naivity I quail and prefer easier tasks such as solving quantum gravity... But, thankfully for you, there really is no accounting for taste, and God may just overlook this on account of your age. However, amzing to see just how many prog-rock followers there are on this board - personal all-time favourites: Rush - CanadianYes - UK Genesis - UK Sigur Ros - Icelandic Pink Floyd - UK

Post-rock seems to be dominated by non-American bands. Try Mogwai, Sigur Ros, Godspeed You! Black Emperor (and a ton of related bands), Broken Social Scene, mum, and plenty more. You might not like them, but they're certainly not unoriginal.

Sometimes I wonder if there should be a test administrated before allowing access to the internet. However, I must point out that I have encountered euro-snobs that provide a very nice counterweight to master prophex

There a whole branch of new wave and post rock bands that never seem to have made much of an impact in the US.
The ClashGang Of Four The Stranglers Joy Division Cocteau Twins Talk Talk New Order The Stone Roses Happy Mondays What about Radiohead - pretty original I'd say? What about German motorik from the 70' - bands such as Can and Neu! were way ahed of their time. What about the electronic work of the likes of Aphex Twin, Squarepusher, Orbital, Massive Attack and Leftfield? If anything mainstream music in the US has become very conservative of late. There's a whole host of suff going on the the UK and Europe right now. If you don't know about these bands that's your problem, not anyone else's!

quote: Nah. Anybody who thinks the Beatles were "unoriginal" simply has appalling taste. It's hilarious, also, that you rant on and on about the Beatles being "unoriginal" when Eliot Smith covered at least 9 Beatles songs (recorded one) and Daniel Johnston wrote a song called "Beatles" that include the lyrics, "Like a magical fairy tale that's hard to believe/ but it really did happen/Four lads who shook the world/ God Bless them for what they done". And Brian Wildon greatly admired the Beatles (and vice-versa). and you do realize that all three of these musicians are literally, as in clinically, mentally ill? Edited by nator, : No reason given. Prophex, I included a few clinically insane people in there because you clearly like your musicians to be, shall we say, a few cards short of a full deck.
Peter Gabriel/early GenesisDavid Bowie Joy Division The Cure The Clash Sigur Ros(Icelandic) The Sugarcubes/Bjork (Iceland) The Kinks Neil Young Radiohead Arcade Fire Can (German) Pink Floyd Richard Thompson The Who U2(Irish) King Crimson

I personally nominate Richard Thompson to be one of the "guitar gods".

The only thing I can say to describe the difference between the Beatles and a man like Daniel Johnston is that Daniel Johnston was a true artist, which I know is such a horrible description on my part...
Can't really describe it, all the Beatles are so ordinary though. As cool as they are. And it's not even about being ordinary though, it's about a genius who comes out of a bunch of crap every 100 years. These 3 were so close in time though. Elliott Smith was way different than DJ and BW though, I think it was because he pursued philosophy, but that is just stupid speculation. All I can say is that these 3 guys stand out to me, and that they should stand out to you too. I haven't listened to as much Brian Wilson as I plan to, so don't take my word on him, he may not be as good as Johnston.. But Johnston and Elliott were really something, they were so original and brilliant. Thanks for the discussion, obviously I don't stand by my original comments as I said in the beginning that I try not to view the world through maps. But for discussion's sake - it seems that there still has been somewhat of a drought outside of the US and Canada at least. Even Canada doesn't really fit the bill. This isn't at all scientific as variables exist like population, density of people, culture mixing... etc... I wouldn't begin to say why the US is in the lead, so to speak, in musical brilliance. The United States is also the home-country of the best rapper of all time: Nas.
