quote: Cool band! What's a nice christian like you doing listening to music like this? Heh... I'm not a huge fan, but I enjoy this genre. I've been following the drummer, Gene "the machine" Hoglan since he was in Death. I kind of wish he stayed with them, but oh well. Before I was a Christian I listened to this music, and then some, and still do to some degree based on the content. My old band used to play shows all throughout Florida in the metal/hardcore circuit until it dissolved in '99. But since my conversion, I've filtered a lot of that music and phased it out of my life. For instance, I grew up on Slayer. And though I still like most of their music (albeit the newest album was a complete disappointment), its so anti-christ that I just can't stomach it. Its not even that I feel some sort of duty to not listen to it, some it just sickens me to the core. But I still listen to metal and hardcore.
Ever listened to Meshuggah? Incredibly talented band - very heavy with superb drumming. Yes, I have listened to them. They are , technical, original and I think they're very talented, but for some reason I can't really get into it that much. "A man can no more diminish God's glory by refusing to worship Him than a lunatic can put out the sun by scribbling the word, 'darkness' on the walls of his cell." -C.S. Lewis

14. Children of Bodom (Finland) In my car's cd player right now, Are You Dead Yet. Good album, I love the guitar and keyboard solo battles.

Well I have no religious reservations, but I do find their music and "God is evil" message very tired and repetitive.

The self consciously abstract lyrics and some of the screaming vocals are a weak point, but the driving, polymetric nature of their music inspires me (I'm a bassist and drummer). It's like Kraftwerk on a rampage! I'm not a metalhead, but I am a bit of a muso. I have long been in the habit of picking up on the most extreme examples of any given genre.

You may not like this type of music as a matter of taste, but it is hard to deny the "originality" and "innovativeness" of bands such as:
Joy Division/New Order - UKThe Cure - UK Depeche Mode - UK KMFDM - Germany Elvis Costello - UK The Polics - UK The Clash - UK Gang of Four - UK Echo and the Bunnymen - UK Kraftwerk - Germany Bjork - Iceland The Sex Pistols - UK Siouxsie and the Banshees - UK Roxy Music - UK Wolfsheim - Germany The Smiths/Morrissey - UK Eurythmics - UK Tears for Fears - UK Oh and let us not forget freakin' DAVID BOWIE! You also cannot deny that Punk was born in the UK as well as New Wave and synthpop. More recently we have some post-punk revivalists (which have largely built on the music of the above bands, so their "originality" might be in question) such as: Franz Ferdinand - UKBloc Party - UK Kaiser Chiefs - UK Metric - Canada The Organ - Canada I've only listed the most recognizable names in the genres. There are many many other "Good non-American bands" in these genres. But again it is a matter of taste and therefore a pretty silly topic.

Excuse me? First of all, your taste in music is a matter of opinion.
Ever hear of Aesthetics? It's a branch of philosophy that stands by the claim that beauty is actually OBJECTIVE.
I'm gonna have to seriously disagree. The Beach Boys didn't even write their own music, and what was written wasn't very good, IMO. Lie O'reilly.

Yeah, I listened to the clips...
Wasn't impressed with Rush's lyrics. The music was that of cliche classic rock played on radio stations 24/7. Pink Floyd remains OK. Still have to check out Barrett. YES didn't make any good sounds. I don't know man, Not to diss your music or anything, I just thought it was all OK, decent. The guys I have mentioned don't let you come back to the music you used to listen to... Led Zeppelin are complex sure, you've proved that, but is the sound aesthetically pleasing to the ear? Or do you like them because paige cane rip up and down that piece of wood?? Ask yourself do you listen to them because they are cool, or technically brilliant? Or is it the sound that draws you in? Usually they coincide with eachother by the way. It gets messy when you hear a band like Slayer or Yngwie Malmsteen.... Or Paul Gilbert, or Steve Vai or Satriana etc........... All of these bands can be lumped into one mediocre pile. Children of Bodom was mentioned, slayer.. Gee wiz. Metallica and on and on and on. PS: Just realized that you were referring to the structure of Black Dog, me and my friend used to play that all the time. It was really hard for me to learn as well, I was very happy when I finally got it. Listening back to it though, I never really liked the sound. So harsh and just crap. Fake blues man. One thing I am curious about, prophex... Just what do you mean when you call The Beatles "average joes"? I know like ten people are going to try to rebut what I am about to write, but I don't care. The Beatles were just ordinary people without "agendas". They were into having fun and writing songs about nothing. They loved music and melody. They lived life for fun and were not in any sense "true artists". Watch an interview with the Beatles and you see it right away. Average Joes is the best term I can use to describe them, they were not in any way remarkable. The played good music, but they had nothing in it for anyone. No agendas you know? They were cool I guess.

But again it is a matter of taste and therefore a pretty silly topic. We could all listen to every single group or person mentioned in this thread and come to a real and objective concensus I believe. But this topic is silly because I have already stated from the get-go that humans are humans. We all can make beautiful sounds. I could debate at length the validity of the bands you have mentioned but at this point it would not be worthwhile.
