Ok guys
Thanks for all the good replies...
I have realized though that true artists are so rare.
As I said before, this was only a test...
Unfortunately nothing good came out of it from your end...
But it doesnt matter anymore.
GO LISTEN TO DANIEL JOHNSTON AND BRIAN WILSON AND ELLIOT SMITH NOW!!
THEY ARE TRUE ARTISTS THEY ARE THE BEST OF OUR CENTURIES, THEY WILL BE REMEMBERED!!
Europe is in a drought it looks like still though.. After the great classics there has been nothing very stimulating.. No true artists.
But America is only lucky to have been gifted with these geniuses..

Re: Here's some innovative non US groups/artists
Prophex, I included a few clinically insane people in there because you clearly like your musicians to be, shall we say, a few cards short of a full deck.
You don't know what you're saying haha.

The only thing I can say to describe the difference between the Beatles and a man like Daniel Johnston is that Daniel Johnston was a true artist, which I know is such a horrible description on my part...
Can't really describe it, all the Beatles are so ordinary though. As cool as they are.
And it's not even about being ordinary though, it's about a genius who comes out of a bunch of crap every 100 years. These 3 were so close in time though. Elliott Smith was way different than DJ and BW though, I think it was because he pursued philosophy, but that is just stupid speculation. All I can say is that these 3 guys stand out to me, and that they should stand out to you too.
I haven't listened to as much Brian Wilson as I plan to, so don't take my word on him, he may not be as good as Johnston.. But Johnston and Elliott were really something, they were so original and brilliant.
Thanks for the discussion, obviously I don't stand by my original comments as I said in the beginning that I try not to view the world through maps. But for discussion's sake - it seems that there still has been somewhat of a drought outside of the US and Canada at least. Even Canada doesn't really fit the bill. This isn't at all scientific as variables exist like population, density of people, culture mixing... etc...
I wouldn't begin to say why the US is in the lead, so to speak, in musical brilliance.
The United States is also the home-country of the best rapper of all time: Nas.

Excuse me? First of all, your taste in music is a matter of opinion.
Ever hear of Aesthetics?
It's a branch of philosophy that stands by the claim that beauty is actually OBJECTIVE.
I'm gonna have to seriously disagree. The Beach Boys didn't even write their own music, and what was written wasn't very good, IMO.
Lie O'reilly.

Re: Prophex!
Yeah, I listened to the clips...
Wasn't impressed with Rush's lyrics. The music was that of cliche classic rock played on radio stations 24/7.
Pink Floyd remains OK. Still have to check out Barrett.
YES didn't make any good sounds.
I don't know man, Not to diss your music or anything, I just thought it was all OK, decent.
The guys I have mentioned don't let you come back to the music you used to listen to...
Led Zeppelin are complex sure, you've proved that, but is the sound aesthetically pleasing to the ear? Or do you like them because paige cane rip up and down that piece of wood?? Ask yourself do you listen to them because they are cool, or technically brilliant? Or is it the sound that draws you in?
Usually they coincide with eachother by the way. It gets messy when you hear a band like Slayer or Yngwie Malmsteen.... Or Paul Gilbert, or Steve Vai or Satriana etc...........
All of these bands can be lumped into one mediocre pile. Children of Bodom was mentioned, slayer.. Gee wiz. Metallica and on and on and on.
PS: Just realized that you were referring to the structure of Black Dog, me and my friend used to play that all the time.
It was really hard for me to learn as well, I was very happy when I finally got it.
Listening back to it though, I never really liked the sound. So harsh and just crap. Fake blues man.

Re: just wondering
One thing I am curious about, prophex...
Just what do you mean when you call The Beatles "average joes"?
I know like ten people are going to try to rebut what I am about to write, but I don't care.
The Beatles were just ordinary people without "agendas". They were into having fun and writing songs about nothing. They loved music and melody. They lived life for fun and were not in any sense "true artists".
Watch an interview with the Beatles and you see it right away.
Average Joes is the best term I can use to describe them, they were not in any way remarkable. The played good music, but they had nothing in it for anyone. No agendas you know?
They were cool I guess.

Re: New Wave/Goth/{post}Punk/Synth/Other
But again it is a matter of taste and therefore a pretty silly topic.
We could all listen to every single group or person mentioned in this thread and come to a real and objective concensus I believe. But this topic is silly because I have already stated from the get-go that humans are humans. We all can make beautiful sounds.
I could debate at length the validity of the bands you have mentioned but at this point it would not be worthwhile.

Re: just wondering
Why is it impossible to be a "true artist" if you also "live life for fun"?
Because intelligent human beings don't "live for fun", people who change the world don't "live for fun". Those who live fruitful lives are tortured in pursuit of truth, knowledge...
"An unexamined life is not worth living" -Plato
Life isn't about fun, those guys were average joes.
This is the difference between Elliott Smith and The Beatles and Johnston and The Beatles. This separates Soren Kierkegaard from the rest of them...
The sooner you realize what is the most worthwhile way to live, you will understand what is so special about Kierkegaard and Plato. Elliot Smith and Johnston.

Re: just wondering
Leaving aside that some of the best artists in any medium were the ones who were just messing around and having a good time...
Evidence? Examples?
in what universe did John Lennon not have an agenda?
John Lennon wasn't anything.

Re: just wondering
seriously, prophex, you need help. music isn't about being tortured. music is about fun. music is about enjoying yourself. sometimes, it's about spreading a message.
If you're dancing.
I know it's not about being tortured neanderthalis.
relax, enjoy life a little bit. as they say, "let your hair hang down".
lol
I don't get it haha. I tell you guys about some individuals who lived amazing lives - how you should all live, and I get this,... haha
