Re: just wondering
Do you have any idea how many versions of "I'm an artist, nobody understands me, I'm so deep and pained" exist in this world?
Let's pretend that you were joking too.
lol it's come to this

correction: the beatles didn't play blues, esp. not blues-rock.
they are, in a way, proto pop rock.
oh, and just where did Hendrix make it big? England. Yardbirds? England. Zeppelin? England. Cream? England. Like it or not, these bands are original. And all from Europe (though Hendrix grew up in the US, he never made the music scene here until after his breakthrough in England).
as to your comment about Hamlet's monolouge--if that doesn't move you in some way, you're inhuman. Face it prophex, shakespeare touches the soul like few can. it's more than just total mastery of the english language.

Re: just wondering
All I am saying is that from what I have read and heard of Lennon and Shakespeare put up next to Smith and Johnston it doesn't hold up.
Should we start by going over what the word "specifically" means?
The lyrics to Imagine are horrible.
That wasn't a Beatles song, just fyi. But I agree, it was substandard.
So, there's one song you don't like, out of a twenty year career. Glad we're narrowing the field so far.
The words in Shakespeare's plays are cool and good sure, but there is nothing that you can take out of Shakespeare and show me that would amaze me, inspire me, or make me feel that Shakespeare was not some average joe who learned to write the english language down on paper.
Yeah, I didn't ask you if you liked it. I asked you what he didn't understand about life (your words, remember) that was understood by Smith and Johnston.
You see there are 2 different kinds of people at this level, those who know and those who don't.
Fabulous. What, specifically, did Shakespeare not know?
The ones who don't are greatly appreciated by those millions of others who don't and the ones that do but are misunderstood by the masses like here in this microcosm at evc.
I see. It's an Indie Rock Pete thing.

"I know some of you are going to say 'I did look it up, and that's not true.' That's 'cause you looked it up in a book. Next time, look it up in your gut."
-Stephen Colbert

Johnston and Smith loved the Beatles
prophex writes:
All you got is the Beatles. haha
Well, they were inspiring to Johnston:
Wiki writes:
Johnston began recording John Lennon- and Beatles-inspired music in the late 1970s on a $59 Sanyo monaural Boombox, singing and playing guitar, piano, and chord organ.
And especially to Smith:
Wiki writes:
He cited his influences while growing up as Bob Dylan, KISS, The Clash, Elvis Costello, Hank Williams, but most importantly The Beatles. Smith continued to be a dedicated fan of The Beatles (as well as their solo projects) and once noted that he had been listening to them frequently since he was about "four years old."
Note that of the six "artists" cited, half of the them are British. Continuing:
Wiki writes:
In 1998, Smith recorded and contributed a cover version of the Beatles song "Because" to the American Beauty soundtrack, which can be heard during the closing credits of the film. Although this was the only Beatles song that Smith ever officially released, he was known to have recorded at least one other ("Revolution", during the sessions for XO), and played many during his live concerts. Among the songs he is known to have played during concerts are "Blackbird", "Yer Blues", "I Me Mine", "For No One", "Something", "I'm So Tired", "Long, Long, Long", and "I'm Only Sleeping". He also played from the Beatles members' solo careers including the John Lennon song "Jealous Guy", and the George Harrison songs "Give Me Love", "My Sweet Lord", and "Isn't it a Pity?". Smith was also rumored to have recorded a version of "Hey Jude" for the 2001 Wes Anderson film The Royal Tenenbaums to be played during the opening scenes, but the song never materialized.
It would seem that the band that you laughingly label as non-artists had a profound impact on those tortured "real" artists you respect.
Not to mention - Johnston and Smith owe an awful lot to the genres of punk and synth music, which have their origins in the UK.
It is fine for you to have your personal tastes, and to find artists that touch you personally and favor them - that is what everyone does. But to essentially make the claim that only mentally ill Americans have the capacity to become "real" artists, because those happen to be the artists you favor, is patently absurd.
When you claim that the Red Hot Chili Peppers are innovative artists worthy of respect, and then deny all other artists from the Sex Pistols to Bjork, it becomes clear that you are wrapped up in your own little world. Hopefully not quite in the same way Johnston and Smith are/were.

I can't think of any real good bands from either France, Mexico, Italy, Brazil, Chili, or Germany (that I like anyway).
But I am not saying there isnt one there, I would love to hear of them.
Maybe Germany has something, and or Poland. But most of the stuff I hear from those countries all sounds second rate.
I was thinking about Canada, but couldn't think of any bands off hand.
There are some good worship bands out of Canada, but we are talking about rock n roll, and blues.

I don't think there is any good rock and blues in Europe.
All you got is the Beatles. haha
I don't like the Rolling Stones all that much, but if you weigh in all the factors, I think the Stones are the greatest rock band ever.
How you could say that Eric Clapton sucks is beyond me. Anyone who is anyone gets there rifs from clapton (for that given style of music).
It's like comparing cavemen to Einstein or something. You have to compare apples to apples. You probably also don't realize how hard it is to make something sound easy. do you even play an instrument?

out of canada you have rush, among other's but that's not the point.
you called America and Europe countries. not sure if you missed that or not. i was just listing a bunch of countries in those geographical areas, so as to remove any confusion over whether Europe is one country or many (and same with America).

I have to get more of the Beatles work before I criticize it.
Just wanted to add that, didn't want to bump it or anything.

Wait, are you now admitting that you completely dissed the Beatles without having listened to much of their work?
Why do you waste everyone's time, including your own?

Wait, are you now admitting that you completely dissed the Beatles without having listened to much of their work?
i think it's easy to forget how influential the beatles were, when everything you listen to today, and everything you've ever heard has essentially been influenced by them. nothing sounds new or innovative, because you've already heard it all before -- in people who got it from them.
anyways. now that i've said that, can i voice my opinion that the beatles are perhaps a little overrated? and that i actually like wings better?

Led zeppelin does suck tho, jimmy paige is the most unoriginal and harshly sounding shit guitar i have ever heard. power chord blues... he made the blues cliche with his shitty music.
you realize, of course, that led zeppelin was the first band to effectively combine rock and roll and blues, right? it's not unoriginal if nobody else has ever done it before.
yes, they had blues influences. every band has influences.

Try Pink Floyd.
Ok, I admit from what I heard they are ok. But the guitar work is too robotic.. and their live shows have a million people onstage so ridiculous.. No, I'll leave them with mediocre, still have to look into sid barrett though..
...robotic? i can't say i've ever heard that before. your views on music are truly unique. what DO you like? because i listen to some of the stuff you mention, and fail to see why they excite you, and some of this doesn't.

Re: Just Face it
Given that half my cd collection is taken up by one band (Nine Inch Nails) I guess that my tastes tend to lean on the American side of the border.
mine too. trent seems to inspire crazy collectors who have to every damned release.
to be fair, my record collection is a lot more diverse.
