we had our own version of chess tournaments at my high school--during the lunch period. there was a whole group of us that always played, and stood around waiting for the chance.
granted, you can't really give hints that easily, unless both sides agreed to it, or until after the fact. after the fact is fun though--esp. when you point out something incredibly obvious from the outside looking in that they totally missed. man I miss those good old days (old being 2 years ago)

If cheating is an issue then bridge might be the better game. I don't think anyone's yet invented a really good computerized bidding system. The ones that do exist (at least that I've seen) tend to use the simple Goren bidding standards, but most tournament players nowadays use the yellow-card system which uses many, many more conventional bids (bids that mean something quite different than the calls used to make them would naturally suggest).
There are some programs that, as I understand but don't know first-hand, are quite good at suggesting opening leads after a competitive auction, but the effect of using one to cheat would be negligible on a player's overall performance. Very few people seem to play bridge these days, but I like it. W.W.E.D.?

Yay! Hurray for bridge!
I'm with you. I may be just as bad at bridge as I am at chess but I enjoy playing it a lot more. Count me in when the bridge league starts. TTFN, WK

Count me in. I played another member here for about 5 games on another gaming server, it was good fun. One question, are the games going to be one move at a time? or are we sitting down with a clock. I don't play well under the clock. I played the guys on 42nd street(NYC), and under the clock they always beat me, then one guy offered to play without the clock, for a large sum of money, and I won.

I registered.
I am shammahbn at gameknot.com I won't cheat, but if my kids walk in the room, they may offer suggestions. I will greatly discourage this, so it would happen rarely, but I can beat any of them blindfolded (literally), so they're very unlikely to be of any help. Also, the two best are teenagers, so they have the self-control not to say anything. Don't get scared, I've played some blindfold chess, but I was only USCF 1600 or so at my best with my eyes open, which I'm not at anymore.

It was a long time ago (maybe 24 years) and I am not sure what the time was, maybe 30 secs per move?
They like to keep things moving there, as there are people lining up to play them. I wonder if they still do that. {ABE} BTW, that was the only time I ever played with a clock. Anyway, I am way out of practice, and need all the help I can get. No doubt I will be making some simple mistakes getting back into it. Edited by riVeRraT, : No reason given.

I played the guys on 42nd street(NYC), and under the clock they always beat me, then one guy offered to play without the clock, for a large sum of money, and I won. I used to play an indeterminately eastern European taxi driver in Bangkok (don't ask how that happened, he wouldn't talk about it). He was incredibly good. I never beat him, but it made me a much stronger player, something I only appreciated later when I moved away and started playing other people.
